^ I found that the OII MKI and MKII were both less bright than the SR-Lambda that I formerly owned. Only marginally so, but still a noticeable difference to my ears. I'm also in agreement with Elephas about the overall signature of both OIIs. While I wouldn't really call either "dark" sounding, neither has a treble tilt, which is what I prefer.

If this is going to be a group buy of only stuffed PCBs and potentially enclosures too, I guess I might as well retract. I was originally hoping to commission someone to build a finished amp, oh well. If it's not feasible I understand. I have no DIY skill of my own unfortunately - money is the only leverage I have.

If you find the right source, you can get the sound you want out of the GS-X. That can't be said for most other amps. The "wire with gain" description means you should carefully consider your source options.

Lots of bang for the buck for a pure-silver IC, really a great value. I've since heard better ICs but I still think the Silver Res is a fine choice on the budget-fi side. The ETI Bullet connectors were a nuisance though, especially on components with closely-spaced RCA jacks, as they have tons of grip and almost have to be entirely grasped in order to pull them off easily. And with the 30-day return policy it couldn't hurt to try. Also I ran a Loaner Program on my former Silver Res ICs in the Cable forum at the other site here: Three-Part Review: Signal Cable Silver Analog, Magic Power Digital - Head-Fi: Covering Headphones, Earphones and Portable Audio And if you read through Signal Cable's feedback on Audiogon there's lots of customer feedback on the ICs too.

And where did you read that? That's not consistent with my experience - the APS V3 on the K701 enhances the treble as opposed to detracting from it.

I just sold my normal-bias SR-Lambda and have been listening to my SR-X MKIII for the past couple hours. Haven't listened to it for a while, I forgot how good it sounds - definitely in my top 3 favorite headphones so far (of any type) for sound quality after the Qualia 010 and AD2000! (Beating out former favorites like the K701 and W5000.) Such a great all-rounder, maybe even a better all-rounder than either the Qualia or the AD2000, as I have lots of CDs I don't listen to with the AD2000 and lots I don't listen to with the Qualia either, but the SR-X MKIII is enjoyable with every CD I'm putting it through. Haven't had any comfort issues either yet, haven't needed to take them off since I put them on. Of the stats I've heard, I prefer the SR-X MKIII the most, beating out even the OII MKI (there's just something about the MKI that's a sonic mis-match for me). Of course I'll have to find out how far the BHSE will take the MKI... And I'll admit to being a big K701 fan before but I find my opinion of it definitively changing now - I'm starting to think it's more of an average, nothing-special headphone. In some ways I can't even tolerate it anymore, at times I feel there's a veil over the music when listening with it.

If they have to be self-powered monitors, I've read good things about M-Audio's speakers.

I heard the A5 at last year's RMAF - it's a decent speaker, I don't see how one could go wrong with it for the price. There are lots of bookshelf/mini-monitor speakers in that price range though. I've read good things about Energy, Epos, and Monitor Audio to start with.
