The few times I can see people needing a lot of gain are when they use very inefficient headphones playing music that isnt recorded anywhere near 0dBfs. The rest seems to be perception of amplifier power by people who just dont understand gain.

Fark, that sucks. With the issues I had with the pair I owned, I have to admit to being a bit leery of picking up a pair again if the opportunity presents, though they definitely have a certain appeal to them. SR-X on steroids though, that does sound promising. Be curious to hear them, and the SR-X Pros if you ever get those built.

Nate, the 7000 has a beefy r-core transformer instead of the pair of cheap EI ones on your 1000. My guess is that it should be good. Nice chips, and IIRC, a VCXO based secondary PLL. No idea what the output stage is like though.

If something eventually happens to the cable on a mk1, can it be replaced with the improved mk2 cable and strain relief?

Yup, I used the ER20 too, definitely handy. Ears didnt hurt one bit.
