October 26, 200718 yr Okay, so here's the deal: My father has agreed to pay for headphones for me if I find ones I deem suitable. I'm looking for a minimum frequency response of 5 - 35K Hz, Closed, preferably circum-aural. At the moment the only ones that I've come across that look any good are Audio-Technica ATH-A1000, Audio-Technica ATH-A900, and Sony MDRD777SL ... I know that the Beyer DT770's sound good, but my ex who I'm friends with has those and it would be copying, and in the spirit of competition I'd like to see if I can do better than those... I've heard wonderful things about this site being blunt and to the point when it comes to it. Please help me get the best I can get. Thankyou.
October 26, 200718 yr Bluntly... why the fuck do you need a frequency response of 5 - 35KHz? Are you a dog? Looking for instant bowel movements (not that headphones could achieve that anyway)?
October 26, 200718 yr Might also be helpful to provide some background information like where and how you'll be using the headphones.
October 26, 200718 yr Published frequency response isn't really a way to evaluate headphones. It's just marketting. If you're listening to a cd, you're not getting any information above 22.05khz anyway. But the first thing you'll need to mention is budget, since a huge percentage of people on this particular forum have headphone rigs that cost north of $5000.

You can certainly trounce the sq of the 770s, but as others have said, what's your budget, what sound do you like (if you know), and how/where will you be using them? Are you looking for just headphones? If so, what source/amp (or none) will you be using? Is closed a necessity (that really limits things)? Etc. a huge percentage of people on this particular forum have headphone rigs that cost north of $5000. Snob.
October 26, 200718 yr Snob. I'm not one of them . Just pointing out that the rabbit hole goes deeper than it appears on the surface, so it helps to mention your budget.
October 27, 200718 yr Hi, welcome to Head-Case. (Can I say this? I'm practically a newbie myself.) If you're interested in a closed, full-size headphone, the Audio-Technica A Series is a good option. I don't currently have one, I used to own the A950LTD. They recently announced the A900Ti, the latest iteration of the A900 range. I would assume it sounds similar to the A900LTD and A950LTD. The A1000 was discontinued and not readily available. If you can find one, it might be a good collector's piece.
October 27, 200718 yr welcome to head-case, yadda yadda I think all would have gone more smoothly if the OP had actually asked a complete question.
October 27, 200718 yr Wait, there's an A950? The K 271 Studio is a great headphone, but you pretty much need an amp.
October 27, 200718 yr Wait, there's an A950? The K 271 Studio is a great headphone, but you pretty much need an amp. A950LTD, limited edition. My W3000 is better
October 27, 200718 yr My W3000 is better Oh lord, is this what we're going to be stuck with now? It'll be like Reks and his speaker talk.
October 27, 200718 yr Oh lord, is this what we're going to be stuck with now? It'll be like Reks and his speaker talk. ROFL. Naw once for emphasis
October 27, 200718 yr I'm going to buy 20 L3K drivers and mount them in 20 W100 enclosures, then mount them on two vertical racks and power them like speakers.
October 27, 200718 yr We all know the CEO and Chairman of AudioTechnica has a gigantic vault filled with L3000 drivers that he swims in like Scrouge and his money.
October 27, 200718 yr A950LTD, limited edition. My W3000 is betterI should hope so! Are the A950LTD all that different from the standard A900s? Cuz they sound baaad.
October 27, 200718 yr When did the 950LTD come out? Like 8 months ago? Why am I only hearing about it now? It's fucking black, goddamnit, you all are supposed to inform me of these things.
October 27, 200718 yr It's fucking black, goddamnit, you all are supposed to inform me of these things. Just so that you know, the Reference 3A MM de Capo is totally black.
October 27, 200718 yr But the outriggers aren't black, whereas the stand on the Reference 3A is also black.
October 28, 200718 yr there is another limited edition 900 apparently. Geez, it's like every headphone they make is a Limited Edition. And I love how the OP hasn't bothered to come back and add any more information.
October 28, 200718 yr Geez, it's like every headphone they make is a Limited Edition. Welcome to how they do things in my lovely home country. If you think that's crazy, just know that there's usually a Limited Edition version for just about most video game releases.
October 28, 200718 yr I got the A950LTD when it was released and sold it soon afterwards. It was a special edition for the Asia market ex. Japan. Here it is in battle vs. other ATs. The A950LTD is the upper-right headphone.
October 28, 200718 yr Elephas -- I remember that shoot-out, so yeah, you're exempt.there is another limited edition 900 apparently.Yeah, but they're not black. Not a complete deal-killer -- I like titanium as well -- so I will proabably still get a pair. But I mean, c'mon -- BLACK. Oh, and re: Reference 3A -- they're already on my radar. Their Corian-baffled speakers can be made with any Corian that Dupont will make, including like a dozen different flavors under the category of black. The Thiels look nice in black, but I'm so used to seeing them in wood. The Gallos come in black as well.
