Entirely purposeful.  My response to "is there a better idea for a music video?" -- "No."  I mean, what a weird little movie to reinterpret, and yet they captured its essence quite well -- I can't even imagine trying to pick another quirky movie and condensing it to the length of a song and no more, and getting as much of it as they did.
