  • After 5 years from the time I acquired the PCBs and parts, I finally took advantage of the free time created by the pandemic and completed my KGSSHV.  This is the offboard version with +/-500V supply.

  • Not sure if we have a KGSS thread but I'll just post this here.  So last year it dawned on me that I built my first KGSS amp 15 years ago and something had to be done to celebrate that.  It started of

Thank you cobra. I think I may end up gong with the off board heatsinks, not sure yet.

Are the ceramic pads (532-4170) needed for the FQPF8N80C large heatsinks or only for the small heatsinks in the PSU?

FQPF8N80C are isolated so they do not need the ceramic pads. Same with the 2sc4686.

The reason I asked is I thought Andy used thermal compound. At least that's what it looks like in his pictures.

If I remember correctly that was done so all the transistor leads would be bent the same length. While of course nothing bad will come of using the pads with them, they are not necessary. I'm not sure why it was done in the PSU - maybe just precautionary? Anyway they don't need it, otherwise my amp wouldn't be playing sweet music right now grin.gif

We did it to make things the same height but knew it was not needed.

Never bought anything from them but these guys have them for $1.99: http://netsemi.com/p...ls-plnn-ac.aspx. If you are willing to wait for mouser they have over 1000 on order now, but you will be waiting a while...

I think that $1.99 not a bad price if you need only two dozens. Thanks for the link, I am going to buy these. Taking in to account possibility that mouser could increase the price a bit after they got them in stock, plus mouser have a tendency to push availability dates back further.

I'm going to get some of the regular version (not the A part) and test, to be safe

you should probably run only +/-475. This part at least for now is not discontinued.

Do these need to be matched? The BOM calls for 12 of them. How many should one order to be relatively sure of getting enough usable parts. I'll be building the internal heatsink model, so I don't need the "A" part.

One more question. Is this the latest BOM and is it for the internal heatsink model?

If not, could someone please direct me to the latest BOM?

You don't need to match anything (if using LSK389's) to get a fully working amp with no issues but matching doesn't hurt. I for one wouldn't bother to match the output transistors unless you had a large stock to choose from.

Surely that can't be serious...

I got similar quotes on bdent.com. Luckily they had USPS and UPS. USPS was "only" $35 for 18 pieces undecided.gif

If not, could someone please direct me to the latest BOM?

Here's the one I've been using. Prices might need to be updated.

Edit: spotted one thing. At R6 and R16, Use 20k for 450V supply, or 18K for 500V supply. For 475V supply I believe it is 19.1K to get around 473V?

the transistors do not have to be matched.

the above bom i believe is correct

the other one had the older power supply parts

My shipping estimate was $12 for 30 pieces shipped to Virginia US. if you can't wait untill mouser have them back in stock please pm me.

For the 500V power supply, my understanding is that the 15K and 787K resistors are not used.

Do I use the .22 uF/1000V capacitors for the 500V PS or leave them empty?

I know the 3900 pF is optional.

if you are doing the 500 volt supply (unreg = 600 volts or more)

then you don't have to populate C10,D12,R28,R27,D13,C15 and you

install the jumper.

I see the jumper bypasses the pieces that can be omitted. I am wondering if there are any problems if said pieces are installed, some or all. (I already installed D12 and D13 huh.png although no big deal I can remove them.Just curious though.
