December 3, 201015 yr Cubs legend Ron Santo dead at 70 - Daily Pitch: MLB News, Standings, Schedules & More - USATODAY.com If there's any other Cubs fans around, they'll probably care to know about this. Unfortunately I never knew Santo as a player, only as a commentator, but I grew up listening to him on WGN Radio and am very saddened by this.
December 3, 201015 yr RIP Ron. He was playing when I was a kid. He should have been inducted to the HOF long ago.
December 3, 201015 yr RIP, Ron ... as Al said, deserves to be in the hall, and I loved his old school playing and announcing. No doubt where he stood when calling a game.
December 3, 201015 yr RIP. Rough later life with his diabetes and all. Not much of a baseball fan, but I remember him when growing up. Agreed on the HOF as well.
December 3, 201015 yr RIP Ron. He was playing when I was a kid. He should have been inducted to the HOF long ago. Very sad. I remember watching him play when I was a kid living in Chi town, RIP Ron.
December 4, 201015 yr Damn! Ron Santo, Ernie Banks and Billy Williams were staples on the tube when I was growing up. RIP pizza man.
December 4, 201015 yr What a shame. I had no idea that he was diabetic, but of course as a life-long White Sox fan, I never did pay too much attention to him except for that year at the end of his career when he played for the good guys. As far as the Hall of Fame goes, he came quite close a couple of times but there always seemed to be a couple of better candidates who were newly eligible, and there are only so many votes. He was definitely an all around talent with just an amazing glove (only outdone by Brooks Robinson in that era), a well above average bat, and a natural team leader and true competitor. Maybe he'll get in posthumously on the veteran's ballot.
December 6, 201015 yr Santo, Kessinger, Beckert and Banks. That was the infield when I grew up. My 91 year old Mom is a die hard Cubs fan so I grew up watching. I still remember Santo doing head-first belly flop slides. RIP Ronnie. We'll miss you.
