  1. Happy Birthday!
  2. Mine too. In the summer of 1993, I called some fly-by-night headphone company that was advertising in Stereophile. After asking about the SR-60s, they advised me to buy some SR-80s and a "Little" amp instead as they were sure I'd be much happier. Even though it took months to get them as they were backordered, in the end I was I happily used that setup for almost 10 years.
  3. That's what hammers are for.
  4. Firefox does the same for me. To see the URL, click the image to load the pop-up. Then click the save icon, then copy the URL from the place where URLs live, whatever that's called. EDIT: Address Bar -- that's what it's called.
  5. We got at least double what we had from the last storm of the century. Just spent about 2 hours clearing the driveway and walk. It only took so long because the snow blower would spit it into the air, and the wind would put it right back where it started.
  6. Really? It's not much more work for lots of benefit. The RIAA doesn't change-- you just go from signal to signal instead of signal to ground (and double the impedance). The benefit is not worrying about grounding and noise. If I was only going to have one balanced component, it would be the phono stage.
  7. I realized it after I read your post pointing it out but maybe I should make a phono stage ...
  8. My LP12 does not have auto start/stop, so it must be wrong.
  9. Ari's suggestions are the way to go if you want to do some leg work. If not, you can get a "turntable" on Amazon for ~$50. If you want something you'd actually want to listen to, a used Pro-ject of some sort, or even a new one + a Hagerman Bugle would probably be the way to go.
  10. It looks like we got about 25-30% of the expected 2 feet.
  11. We went out and bought emergency provisions yesterday which included some Starbucks double shots, and a bag of caramel corn. Also, conveniently enough, the old gas boiler would have run just fine with the power out. But because millivolt systems no longer meet code, the new boiler won't. Worst upgrade ever. Last year, UConn canceled classes at the mere hint that snow might be coming. This year, nothing yet.
  12. I could use a snow day on Tuesday.
  13. Happy Birthday!
  14. I'd guess that a combination plumber/electrician is neither. Are there metal pipes or radiators that might provide an earth connection?
  15. There was concern that our house was partially knob & tube. We had an electrician poke around, and it turns out not to be. However, he said he rewired an entire house in the neighborhood and it cost $35K (plus wall repair).
  16. A buyer's market is a macro level phenomenon, buying a particular house is a micro level one. Sometimes there is surprisingly little relationship between them. A seller who has not maintained a furnace has likely neglected other things, too. I'd be sure the inspection is thorough.
  17. Nice article on a Robert Frank image: http://lens.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/01/15/robert-frank-telling-it-like-it-was/

    Boardwalk Empire

Agreed. I thought it had become a little intolerable, but the last episode made up for it.
  19. In the end, that server basically is a NAS with a better processor and the ability to do some other stuff. They had one with damaged packaging for even cheaper, and I had CC points, so I picked it up. If anybody wants the old computer, once the new one is configured and running, it is yours for the shipping. The case is actually not that bad -- it is an old HTPC and is very quiet. I'll post some pics/specs at some point. Crappy -- didn't mean that to be so snarky. I use rpy's for things like squeezeplayers, or with a camera to watch the cats. But this needs to run as a squeeze server, samba server, plex server, backup server, etc. so it needs a bit more processing power than the rpy's.
