  1. Season of Storms by Andrzej Sapkowski The translations have been slow coming out, but now that the 5-book series is done, this latest novel (set between the short story collections and the series) was finally released. It's a great adventure – glad to see he hasn't lost his knack for storytelling. There was a 14-year gap between the publication of the last book in the series (1999) and this one (2013, English translation: 2018).
  2. I gave WineBottler a try and didn't have any luck with Internet Explorer 11 or 8, so Parallels might be a better bet. This is Microsoft's official page re: Internet Explorer 11 testing with 90-day virtual machines: https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/tools/vms/
  3. Here are the system requirements for Parallels: https://www.parallels.com/ca/products/desktop/resources/#requirements You'll still have to source an operating system to run Parallels... the last time I ran Parallels, it automatically gave a link to download Windows 10, but you'll still be nagged by Microsoft to activate (pay) after a while. According to EveryMac, the 2010 MacBook Pro is compatible up to Windows 8. I'd recommend downloading Windows 7 instead, because it is easier to use. You'll need to get a 25-character product key from someone to activate Windows. https://everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/specs/macbook-pro-core-2-duo-2.4-aluminum-13-mid-2010-unibody-specs.html Download Windows 7: https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows7 Parallels uses less space than Boot Camp, if I recall correctly, but you'll still need at least 16GB + 500MB of disk space, according to their documentation. VirtualBox is a free application that is similar to Parallels and Fusion, but it doesn't have quite as many features: https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/6.1.4/VirtualBox-6.1.4-136177-OSX.dmg VirtualBox Extension Pack (required for USB): https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/6.1.4/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-6.1.4.vbox-extpack You'll need to download a copy of Windows as above to use VirtualBox.
  4. This looks promising... use the Microsoft Remote Desktop app on your Mac to access Microsoft's remote Azure computer (requires a Microsoft account) to run Internet Explorer: https://osxdaily.com/2015/10/19/use-internet-explorer-11-mac-os-x-easy/
  5. You can set up the HP to accept remote connections if it's running Windows 7 or later Professional or Enterprise edition (not Home): https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/turn-on-remote-desktop-in-windows-vista/ Then you can download Microsoft Remote Desktop 10 on your Mac to log into the HP: https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/microsoft-remote-desktop-10/id1295203466?mt=12 or for older Macs, Microsoft Remote Desktop 8: https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/microsoft-remote-desktop-8/id715768417?mt=12 You'll need to know the IP address of the HP (by clicking on the network icon at the bottom of the screen on the menu bar) and then opening network settings and clicking on the (I assume) wi-fi area. Eventually you'll see an IP address that looks like: 192.168.1.101. You'll also need to know the user name and password of the HP computer to enter into the Microsoft Remote Desktop app on your Mac.

  8. I'd look at installing Microsoft Remote Desktop to login to a Windows computer if you need it to test something on a casual basis – otherwise, Boot Camp or Parallels/Fusion with a Windows install would be necessary. Otherwise: https://dzone.com/articles/7-ways-you-can-test-your-website-on-internet-explo
  9. Nope... gotta love the trolls that come out in the comment section each time, too. It may be that the Aperio sounds good, but I didn't see any measurements or interior pics. Way out of my price range.
  10. Hi-Fi+ magazine just gave the Aperio a positive review: http://www.hifiplus.com/articles/warwick-acoustics-aperio-electrostatic-headphone-system-1/
  11. And a new MacBook Air... less crippled than the previous one – new CPU, keyboard, lower price: https://www.macworld.com/article/3532801/apples-new-macbook-air-packs-a-better-keyboard-and-a-dramatically-lower-price.html

    Vikings

Season 6 is supposed to be the last season... I haven't watched any of it, but I've started seeing references to the show pop up in my YouTube feed since I started looking at Witcher swordmaking and whatnot.

Looks like COVID-19 is going to shut things down for a while. Has anybody watched the Vikings series from the History Channel? Looks like my kind of show.
  14. I noticed the new Cyrus One Cast in today's Hi-Fi+ email – seems to do the job, but obviously it won't be inexpensive at all. The What Hi-Fi review damns it with faint praise: https://www.whathifi.com/us/reviews/cyrus-one-cast The NAD M10 also gets a mediocre grade from What Hi-Fi (do they hate digital amplifiers?): https://www.whathifi.com/us/reviews/nad-masters-m10 There seem to be a lot of new products for a "smart stereo" – few of them do the job as well as a traditional set up, for less money. I might go with a used Arcam Solo Music (3rd gen – 2017) 80W digital amp if I can find one – the local going rate is still around $2,000 for a gently used box, though, and the 2nd-gen Arcam Solo (Neo) is about $750, with an analog amplifier of about 50W at 8 ohms.

  17. Happy Birthday!
  18. Love This Giant Great album... turned the volume up a bit and I'm loving it. I do think David Byrne added a lot of warmth and humanity to Annie Clark's signature cold, brilliant style of music. I hope they do another album together soon.
  19. Congrats – I want one of those too. It's definitely a throwback car – not a lot of electronic nannies or even nods to basic ergonomics in the first couple Vipers.
  20. Alice in Chains – Down in a Hole (the unplugged version is nice, but the song works better with the noise and distortion of electric power – I think this is my favorite Alice in Chains song)

  23. Good call... I'll look into it. A few moments later Went down the Pi hole and found the Khadas Tone Board... anyone tried it? https://www.khadas.com/tone https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/review-and-measurements-of-wesiontek-khadas-tone-board-dac.4823/
  24. That's my conclusion, too. The good ones get pricey fast. I can barely figure out a machine I'd get to run Plex for myself (not that I need it)... I wouldn't dump anything on my dad that would require a manual to operate.
