I feel left out. If I mix three W11JPNs in a pot, can I make a L3K?
-
If Sony hadn't pulled the plug on the 010, I would have bought one as soon as I had the money. But now it's almost impossible to find one in the used market. I'm guessing it'll be almost two decades before Sony brings a new top tier headphone to the tables. Audio-Technica will most likely have something great in a few years, but I doubt it'll be very soon.

Sweet. It's a L3k mob here! Welcome to Head-Case purk!

I loved the K701 but still firmly believe it to be a third tier headphone at its best (rests dead in the fourth tier territory with most amps). The best I've personally heard it was with a Luna and while it was quite wonderful, it pales in comparison with what the K1000 can do. The K701 may be a jack of all trades, but it doesn't have anything special or awe-inspiring in my opinion.

Boutique penssssss.... Cool photos. Ebonite, aye? I wonder how headphones made of these plastics would sound. Edit: I read your review. It seems like you've got quite an enjoyable passion there. Awesome!

CD ripping services cost around $1 +/- $0.25 per CD. SlimDevices offered CD ripping to FLAC and a number of formats in the past. The service is no longer available. ReadytoPlay is the most popular service that I know of: http://www.readytoplay.com/ Other services I am aware of are: http://www.riptopia.com/ - Riptopia and http://www.ripdigital.com/ - RipDigital I would recommend doing a Google search for forum threads or articles to see what people think about the different formats. As to whether they can do SACD 24/96... eeee. Not sure. Hope that helps!

Very nice. That is exactly what I've been looking for. I've heard those descriptions time after time. It just is that good, eh? Time to update siggie?

Hah, "unoffensive". What was I typing? Hmm, yeah. The AD2k is somewhat lacking in the physical solidity department. During my time with one, it felt like two gigantic heavy cups on thin metal strips. (That is, worse than the light plastic cups on thick plastic strips feeling I had with the A900/A500.) The cable feels much weaker/thinner than that of the A900. I actually consider the A500/A900 to relatively heavy duty cans. I've actually thrown my A500 against concrete walls on two occasions (this was after I considered my A500 to be of little value to me due to a bent plug and ripped earpads) to see what would happen. They came out fine. Haha. Aye, the AD2k is much weaker.

Sound is decent. Somewhat Sennheiser-like, but not quite as dark and full sounding (it's a bit airier) and with relatively good PRaT. Relatively unoffensive in sound, but the midrange is somewhat colored. Sounds quite good out of most solid state amps and DAPs I've heard it through; not quite as good through the tube amp (PPX3 SLAM 6SN7) I heard it through where it produces a slightly sluggish sound (probably a matter of impedance of sorts). The problem is that, in my opinion, its construction is less solid than that of the A900/A1000. The thin metallic construction "feels" weaker than hard plastic for some reason. And the relatively high quality cable is quite thin and soft.

Oh oops! I missed the question regarding fit. My head is rather large, so the CD3k actually fits on rather nicely and snuggly as well. When I head-bang, it slides, but not much. (My top head reaches the top of the headband and the width is just perfect such that the sides of the cups are perpendicular to the ground. ... haha, that was probably an unclear description. )

Oh, but his current Chinese unit has a headphone out.

Haha yeah. Hopefully I have enough funds to work with when something good does show up. Hmm, I think they're all gone though.

My dad bought the CD3k in Japan quite a long time ago, but he only used it for a few hours and had it stored in a storage room over there. I told him to go find them and bring them back after his business trip oversees. He just came back today.

Perhaps it's time for me to attempt an acquisition. A few months ago, I would have definitely wanted one. But now, most asking prices are way over-the-top, and I'm running low on funds. I don't know if I'll can financially afford to have one of these in my possession. (Too many eggs in one basket; an market inflated basket.) We'll see. I might just end up with one by the end of the summer.

So I've been listening to the CD3k; it's decent. Not exceptional, but I like it for the craptacularly over-processed music I listen to (namely electronica and foreign pop). It fits the light poppish feel of Asian pop quite well. It sounds somewhat like Ultrasone, but not as much of a failure. It has hints of the SA5k, but lacks the extreme separation I was hoping for. The timbre has less of a plastic-like quality then the SA5k, which is usually a good thing, but it still fails considerably when compared with higher-end cans. Soundstage and imaging are quite strange but rather enjoyable for certain types of music. They're bright, but the strength of those high frequencies isn't too overwhelming for me personally. Of course, I'm one of the few who can stand the SA5k. But on the other hand, it's exceptionally comfortable. As for its use for classical, vocals, alternative, and a lot of rock: I personally think it's not that good. Midrange is off (not as bad as Ultrasones, though, hah), and as before, tone and timbre are too artificial. Overall, I think they're cans I can enjoy for some of the music I listen to: namely, Asian pop and rock and certain types of metal. But it fails me when I listen to my beloved female vocals and jazz.

Holy crap, no way. Maybe I should have kept my PPX3 SLAM. We'll see. A few days ago I told my dad to go through his storage room in Asia (he's currently there for a business trip) and try to find his CD3k that he bought a long time ago. He found it and is coming back later today. The SA5k is still one of my favorite headphones. Its hilariously over-the-top instrument separation is something I enjoyed with complex electronic music.

Oh! So it did work. Aye, good luck on L3k driver hunting!
