You could start by telling us what table it is.

I haven't met you yet, but anyone who could put up with Fairbanks has to have some redeeming qualities.

What kind of rack is that on the Quad web site...
swt61 replied to postjack's topic in Audio Accessories
It's a Quad rack. Not sure if someone else builds it for them though. -
Well it's not to say that I never want to listen to other headphones. I'll keep my HD580, and I'll build a new Ortho woody, but the K1000 just does so many things right. I assumed it would have great technical merit, I just never expected it to be so musical. I'm totaly hooked, and they'll be the first phone I'll grab to test a new piece of equipment or music. Heck I expect they'll be the first phone I grab for just about everything. I'm still looking forward to building my new speakers, because they're going to have a really superior cabinet design (forget conventional box designs), but these headphones almost take the place of speakers. Fitz it's quite an interesting presentation with your old UFW-10, and mine. Mine had an issue with the amp about a year ago, and after 6 months or so it came back with a new replacement amp that's a bit different, but very good. I have the new amp set to go lower, and yours set to crossover a little higher. Via the balanced UFW-10 inputs of coarse. (dual subs for those non Rocket savvy members)

Not with Marc's BH. He has an adjustment knob, and he hooks up a meter to dial it in. The Koss really sing at the higher bias, and they're less dark than the 007. Not to say that the 007 isn't a damn fine headphone, it's just that I prefer the more forward presentation of the Koss. The Koss scales very, very well once you loose that crappy Koss energiser.

Lookin' really good Naaman! I'll be very interested to see how they'll sound. It's hard to picture how such a large driver will reproduce the highs, but I know that many of the larger single drivers do very well.
-
He runs the bias higher than the normal Koss recommendation, memory wants me to say 650, but not sure if that's corrrect. The higher bias is a KG discovery that makes a big difference.
-
I prefer Marc's esp950 to his 007 MkI through his BH.

What are the two layers Naaman? The one looks like a Dynamat type product, or a roofing membrane, but the foil is to thick for that.

^ Damn, I missed it. I can guess. If you look up annoying in the dictionary Azure's picture is there. Still there's a lot worse over there.
-
Exactly! And that prompts the story of how I got to know Nate. I had purchased an M

Yes, you're right Sir, thanks for the correction. It's been a long time and I got her two characters confused. I miss her.
-
Ah, I missed that small tidbit. In the immortal words of Rosanne Rosanna Dana..."never mind".
-
Yeah I guess that would have to be the cause. What prompts the electret in some to wear out earlier than others I can only attribute to abuse.
-
Well, there's more to the story, but there's a great guy out there that doesn't want any publicity for his generosity.
-
So will this be driving your K1000 in the future then?
-
Nice Blackmore! You found one.

The Celestion SL7 have been on my hit list for decades. Those honeycomb cabinets are killer. I've seen a few show up in good shape, but the timing has always been bad.

I may have to build us a pair of those Smeggy T50RP specials Douglas. Those look sweet, and Smegster seems to be quite taken with the sound. I'm with you though, I need to be certain that they have the new pads.
-
So I guess the cups still swivel with your fastening system? I'll want to get a closer look at what you've done there if you're up for that. I may need to make one of these pretty soon. You're workmanship is first rate Smeg old boy!

Damn nice looking phones Smeggy! Are the baffles Maple?

Also one of my favorite features of the K1000 is it's tuneability. Changes in toe in really have a big effect, and I like the ability to tune them for different genres.
-
I'll add that I've heard a few really shitty sounding K340s. I think that due to the age of the headphones, how they've been cared for has a lot to do with the quality of sound.
-
I can answer that...NO. The K1000 is dynamic at it's best IMO. And while being a top tier headphone, there are definitely sonic differences between it and the electrostatic 007 MkI. Which is better of coarse will be a matter of individual opinion, but I doubt you'd feel that owning both would be redundant.

Wow! You didn't waste any time getting started Naaman. A few things I noticed... 1) I see that you've cut braces along with the tops and bottoms. Most people don't bother, and that's a mistake. Not only did you cut out braces, but you took the time to round the interior edges with 1/4" round over bit. I'm not surprised knowing of your attention to detail, but it's great to see. 2) Another thing I noticed is the glue. You're using my favorite glue. It's Titebond's best, and it makes a difference. 3) Nice table saw! 4) This is more of an idea rather than an observation... Another finish choice should you decide veneering is a pain, is to use either leather or Ultra Leather to wrap all the way around the baffle, top, back and bottom. Then make side panels from solid wood with a nice round over on the edges. Kind of a Sonus Faber look. Nice work, I'll stay tuned!
