I happen to think the HP-1 and YH-1 are the best Yamahas in stock form except for the YH-1000. To me the YH-100 absolutely needs modding, but has more to gain from modding than all the other Yamaha drivers. That said I still prefer a modded HP-1/YH-1 to stock. Thanks Jay, I knew we could count on you for a sperm donation.

Well said. I don't think the point is to try to replicate the stat sound, which we know is an effort in futility. The point is to get some of those characteristics plus some very musical, lush, full sound with the addition of strong bass extension at a fraction of the price of the big stats. To my mind the Ortho sound is a great meld of some of the stat and dynamic signatures. What it does well, it does very well, and at a price that's still a relative bargain.

And then when the house catches fire and goes up in minutes, call me to rebuild it.

Yes the Rega RB300 is an excellent value IMO, and it mates quite well with the also excellent valued Denon DL-103. I'd recommend the Hagerman Bugle phono stage. This will give you an excellent little spinning rig IMHO.

Then again there's the stand they requested. Who knows?

I'll second the Paradigm, however I love the MoFi monitor, and bargains are easy to come by... AudiogoN ForSale: Mobile Fidelity OML-1 This is a very nuetral monitor and IME does not need to be placed far from walls.

I agree that seal is key. The velour Beyer pads were terrible. I just wasn't sure how dense the Grado foam would be or how it would seal. I wonder if a rubber coating on the face of the foam pads would be worthwhile? I guess it would just be easier to try a known quantity and go with pleather pads. The Goldring frame fit me very well, but I have a small head. Good thing too, because the NADs just fit at the end of their adjustment. They must have been designed for toddlers? No more Beta22?

Yeah point taken, but I had to post it because it is after all a Cello, and Mark Levinson was my hero. I'm sure even Mark could not make the GS1000 sound like a flagship product. How would a Grado based headband mechanism and custom woody housing sound with the SFIs and the giant foam GS1000 pads? I have no idea how the foam pads would do with planars, but I'd like to try. 3) My penis is very respectable! In fact it's been stored away for 15 years now just to gain back said respectability.

I'll check into it. You know it would be fun to ship you the Donut MkII and have you try them. Then you could also compare the L3000 pad to the OII pad before I drop $140.00 on a set. The MkII uses the YH-100 driver, and is now damped better IMO than the first gen. Donut. They're prettier too. Tomek? I've seen pics, and they do indeed seem to have some type of fabric pads. I assure you they are in no way original equipment, and I'm quite certain he'd get a big jump in SQ if he'd replace them with a suitable pleather/leather donor. He may be under the idea that they are stock pads, but as an original YH-1000 former owner I'm in the know.

Where can I purchase a set of the new Black pads for the 007 MkII? Definitely pleather, just like the YH-100. Hardly anyone was doing leather back then. Yeah the Beyer pads left a lot to be desired. The L3000 get your ear closer to the driver, and are almost a cross between circumaural and supra-aural.
