  1. I see and understand. You don't need the special treatment but my point was that some of the expensive heads claim to have this special treatment. It was in reference to "what you pay for". As is, Bob is not suitable. You will need to modify him and those ears are not suitable for a true binaural head. I know because I tried and have built various binaural and holophonic mics. And yes, I am familiar with the Behringer ECM8000. Great for recording impulses. You can get 1 for $50. I can do 4 - 6 mics at that price with better sound quality than the Behringer ECM8000. Regardless, part of the fun in doing these things is learning and trying different things. Good luck with your build.
  2. He could remove the capsule and circuit from the housing.
  3. Disagree with what? Also, the PDF document you posted stated "This head and torso simulator (HATS) is based on worldwide average human male and female head and torso dimensions and meets the requirements of ANSI S3.36/ASA58-1985 and IEC 60959:1990." When building a dummy head the real focus is on the pinnae and ear shape. Without the pinnae you will not get a fully functional binaural dummy head. You will get localization but not the pin point localization one seeks with a dummy head. If your missing the above, you will essentially have a cool looking holophonic mic or a weird sounding mic. As for mic capsules, you can effectively build a very high end capsule design, if you do your research, for under $50.00.
  4. Here is a recording with a Grado Holophonic mic. You don't always need a dummy head to get a "you are there" sound. As I said before, the benefit of this is that it sounds great on speakers and even better on headphones.
  5. YUP! Also HRTF algorithms can't get close to replicating a true binaural recording. I have tried a lot of them and none can get even close to even a holophonic mic. However, for those who don't have any experience with binaural, it's quite easy to fool them with HRTF algorithms.
  6. You have the basic idea right. However, Bob is not suitable to make a "correct" binaural dummy head. Trust me, I have read into this stuff for over a year and have made a few mics. I say ditch Bob and make a holophonic mic. It's cheaper and it is speaker compatible. If you truly want to make a dummy head, you can't use Bob as is. Your are NOT just paying for the EQ and research. The more expensive heads use materials that actually mimic the acoustic response of the skin and "average" facial features. They also weigh close to what an "average" head weighs. The capsules are also of very high quality. The mic circuit you use will also affect the sound quality. Anyway, PM me if you have any more questions or feel free to post them here.
  7. Tell me about it. Idiot all the way. Knowing how properly mic, to me at least, is a total art form (especially when doing minimalist mic'ing) and the very best way to EQ something. Sounds bad, move a little and try again. Nobody does that anymore.
  8. It is tough but little by little, more people are becoming aware of the problem. However, despite that it seems to be creeping into jazz and classical music now. Very sad indeed. I have even seen this mentality on OTHER SITES as well. Seems anything pre-1970 is garbage because recording technology back then was primitive. *sigh* Even when I do this professionally, I always get the client worrying if the mix will be loud enough. Takes a lot of explanation for them to understand the whole volume vs loudness vs dynamics thing. At least The Beatles remasters weren't compressed to hell. Let's hope it starts a trend.
  9. I agree. I love the original sound of the mono box. Sounds great as is. Here is a small clip of a track from the mono box with a little negative EQ. Hope you like: Send big files the easy way. Files too large for email attachments? No problem!

    Moving to Monitors

I have heard and loved the sound of Totem speakers. Great sound with the proper amplification. I hear you can clone them for relatively cheap too. Also a big fan of the Amphion Ions. They sound great.

Too funny! I actually like his music too.
  12. Me too. There are 6 of the 14 albums which have been leaked. I have only found and heard one of them.
  13. That's quite expensive. The MK1's have a reputation for being much better than the MK2's and ever since the MK2's came out and the MK1 stock diminished, the MK1's used price sky rocketed. I got my pair of MK1's for under $600.

Matthew 1 and 2 have me LOL'ing too much!
  16. Just wanted to thank you guys for helping me out! I tried the trick as outlined above and discovered what the problem is. The connectors were fine but one of those thin little wires is loose and I can't re-attach it. Can anyone help out with this - be it hardwire or repair?
  17. Not enough subforums. A home theater subforum would be cool. How about 10 + subforums for sponsors so they can clog up my tiny screen.
  18. I think I may actually give it a shot later on tonight and hope for the best. Just need to find a small screwdriver.
  19. I second the recommendation for the Mackies. I use a pair of HR824's and love them. They are very neutral and the sound is excellent IF you like to hear what's actually on the recording. They are not very forgiving and any flaw will show up! Look for them used as you can often find killer deals on Craigslist for these monitors.
  20. Yeah. It looks daunting to me, especially because I am not handy with small things.
  21. Thanks guys! Upon closer inspection the wire is ok - you guys are right! It's the contacts. They look a little loose. Is there anyone here who can repair those?
