Vintage DAC: Sonic Frontiers SFD-2
I'm a little torn here, to be honest. Yes, it does look like a rip-off if you look at the parts they're actually using in there, but fuck me what an engineering achievement this is. They've made something that's literally audiophile legend now, using two DACs which were designated as low cost parts at its heart. Then again, the "discrete ladder" that accounts for the remaining 8 bits couldn't have been that easy to build, could it?

The Great Head-Case Cable Debate
I think it does go that far at least. I've seen the reception the twisted pear guys got over there, and it wasn't nice to say the least.

The Great Head-Case Cable Debate
Possibly (ditto on the assholes part though) :D I know a fair number of them are senior members (who get paid for their work) who got booted out of diyaudio, much like a few of us here.

DIYHiFi.org • View topic - Why do 75R digital cables sound so different If these guys think digital cables can be different who am I to argue with them. DIYHifi is to diyaudio, what head-case is to head-fi.

Another WTF Tube Moment (Oil Damped Tubes)
True that. But all my "worrying" really means is that I am a bit less likely to build a PC soaked in mineral oil =P Damping tubes with it might be fun.

Another WTF Tube Moment (Oil Damped Tubes)
Admittedly, someone on silentpcreview who claimed to be a med student. I'm not saying that its really THAT toxic, but I don't feel entirely comfortable soaking my hands in it (like I would have to if I made a mineral oil cooled PC). Personal opinion, really. Fair enough, I'm in my third year now.

Another WTF Tube Moment (Oil Damped Tubes)
Hmm, its listed as "moderate" in the contact rating. Not something I'd happily dip my hands in. Don't give me condescending bullshit like a comparison to water toxicity, please. Between the two of us, I'm willing to bet I'm the only one who sees that hazards identification chart regularly.

The Great Head-Case Cable Debate
Just one thing, the dielectric constant quoted for cotton on wikipedia is unprocessed cotton ie the fluffy stuff you get from trees. When made into a fabric, the dielectric constant goes up to something like 4-5.

Mineral oil is toxic though, and it has a nasty tendency to accumulate in your body (so I've heard).

The Headcase Stax thread
Carl loves his SR-50s, incidentally. According to him, their main caveat is that they're even worse than the SR-Xmk3 comfort wise.

Busy with real life, I guess.

Heh, you aren't the only one thinking about that. I remember bugging Carl about it but I don't think he said yes.

Audio-gd
How does it work for 24/192 though? I thought the PCM1704 only worked up to 24/96.

Yeh he's a strange one to play. Haven't played in a few months, bet I'll suck if I play now

Audio-gd
Fair enough, but I was sick and tired of having to explain why Class A had next to fuck all to do with DACs. Incidentally, how hot do those TDA1541As get, exactly?

Audio-gd Reference 1 DAC (56 K warning) - Page 32 - Head-Fi: Covering Headphones, Earphones and Portable Audio ARGH. Christ, how thick can people get? Is it that difficult to see through the "Class A" marketing bullshit?

Oh my stars and garters, a flac player!
Fair enough, but about the player, I have my doubts whether its actually going to sound good. The PCM1704 is supposed to be a difficult DAC to work with, even for something that isn't going to be miniaturized.

Oh my stars and garters, a flac player!
A digital out is always nice, but truth be told, do you really want to use that as your transport when listening at home? And would it make sense to lug an external portable DAC around when its already using one of the best DAC chips out there inside it? (assuming the implementation isn't horribly crippled, which is actually easy to do considering the PCM1704's specs)
