  1. You have your secrets (cough cough 307a amp cough cough), and I have mine:D
  2. Just plugged it in today. Wow, fantastic bass, in fact too much, had to pull out my horns from the corners a bit. May need to play around with stuffing or even loading the outputs with some resistance to get some extra dampening. Crystal clear, focused sound, beautiful soundstage and great tone. Nelson Pass knows his stuff. Currently being driven by the headphone output of my moth with EML 45 tubes using a 1/4 inch to RCA adapter with monster cables, lol. I can't wait to get my real headphone/preamp when it's done. Pictures probably tomorrow or the weekend.
  3. yes, the si2a3/45H does have a volume control for the input. Obviously I am aware of this, so using that logic, the presence of the original question could possibly lead you to believe that I might possibly be heading in another direction;)
  4. I am currently going over ideas on beefing up my speaker rig. I've got my power amp pretty much solidified, but I need ideas for a cheap preamp that can suffice until I replace it with a more high end headphone/preamp combo. B&K PRO 10 Don't know much about that pre, but $329 for a FET discrete pre with MM/MC phono stage and balanced output doesn't sound too shabby. Any ideas or thoughts you can share would be great. Again cheaper the better, ideally not a long term solution.
  5. Ummm...I94, I90, I290, I55...either one works
  6. The hotel will accept shipments, but according to our canjam contract they charge you based on weight and how long they store it for, it may be different for chiunifi but I am sure its the same. Also, their workers would be handling your stuff, which I am not sure if your comfortable with that. Jim and I would just oogle over it but we for sure would take care of it.
  7. Woo hoo! PM me Steve I should be able to act as your shipping proxy. It will be a pleasure to meet you. EDIT: Did not read Jim's post - he would be the #1 option because of his truck and pelican cases, so NM.
  8. I concur - my experience with rectifiers on the moth was basically those $400 metal base thingies sounded exactly the same as my low end mullard rebrand.
  9. If that is the case, then consider your mission accomplished...way to go JP, and hopefully we can get some of those guys involved with CanJam 2010.
  10. the whole mesh vs. solid plate thing is weird with EML, you have to use your own ears and gear. I use EML 45 solid plates vs. the mesh based purely on reliability concerns, as well as EML 2a3 solid plates. However, 274 being a rectifier I personally don't put too much creedence into rectifiers having that much of a sonic impact IMO.

  12. Random question - help needed... So I believe I have the OS 3.0 which allows tethering. I like it, but honestly I don't really use it or need it; however, I would like to be able to send pictures through text message (rather than now having to send it as an email attachment through camera). Have you guys upgraded to the newest OS and just dropped your tethering capability? I really don't want to bother having to hack multiple files like HA just to allow tethering on the new OS for iphone, and ideally I would like both MMS and tethering if its simple enough.
  13. Man I bought it at the original price, could have saved a buck:palm:
  14. Yeah, just buy whatever BW's you can afford, and you just said with your dealer they will offer you a full trade in value. I think that is more or less what Grawk is alluding to, you already mention you like that particular house sound, so just stick within it.
  15. As a vocal instructor, I should be vehemently opposed to anything associated with auto-tune...but I have to admit that is pretty dope:palm:
  16. On Friday Jim, please leave the backdoor open so that its easier for me to come by and listen:p Perfect timing too, with Monday being Labor Day weekend, and Friday the wife is going to be out...should be a great day to wait outside your door:)
  17. Some friends of my wife and I were just talking about that this weekend when visiting. He used to work as a professionl photographer and did some work fro Vogue in New York. He said the exact same thing, and even said that with digital photo editing, they just take one half of a model's face, and flip it over exactly, so that the face appears perfectly symetrical, and conveys "beauty". Sorry for the OT.
  18. Sorry Elephas, one more story that might make you feel better... So the Zana Deux has those damper diodes in the back that take care of rectification. Well those damper diodes have plate caps, little pieces of wire that go from the top of the tube into little sockets in the chassis which is part of their normal operation. Craig tells me about this guy who complained to him that the amp was running with the tubes showing their lighted filaments, but there was no sound. Also, the guy complained that when he touched the top of the tubes, he got a little shock. Craig realized that he didn't even have the plate caps on top, but also figured out that the owner threw away those "little pieces" as he didn't think they were important. har har.
  19. Elephas, Biasing tubes is extremely important, and considering the monetary investment you have in the amp, a couple of minutes and a $5 multimeter is well worth the investment for optimal performance.
  20. I agree, couldn't ask for a better friend. Doug and I plan on getting together sometime within the next couple of weeks to check out his new amp he is designing and building, I will shoot you a PM and I am sure we can all get together.
  21. Not simply no load, but no load and playing music through them. I think the fact that Al was able to hear music being played through his OPTs with no load is not a good sign...I have never heard of such a thing, but I guess it does make sense since the iron would resonate and those magnetic fields could actually produce a low acoustic output.
