  1. Is there anything different from the 3g version and wifi version, from a performance/hardware standpoint? I really should stay away from reading random eblogs and such but I believe I may have read that the 3g has a different chip. EDIT: Wow, I think the 32gb 3g might be a bit much for what I am willing to spend on that device. As of now the boss is on board with the 16gb wifi and I probably can schmooze to an upgrade to 32gb wifi but the 3g is pushing it for sure. I really don't have many apps or use a lot if space either, my current 8gb iphone I don't think I have even used 1gb. Question now remains: Buy at local ipad store or go through appl store and avoid sales tax! In addition to the case, are there other accesories I should invest in (like that camera usb dock connector)?
  2. Wife approved ipad purchase, woot! Now need to consider 3g and size. I really don't need the 3g and could use the money for size and apps. Or do I wait for summer on the rumores camera version...
  3. I concur. David unless you have access to information which I or others do not, I think you are really off the mark here. Jacob sums it up really well that if you think this is SP markup with wallwarts and the such I would say you are even more off base. Yes, Todd runs a business, and he is free to charge whatever the heck he wants to charge. His markup is whatever he wants it to be. Whether it is 2x, 3x, or 10x, I truly don't care, as it's his perogative. There is always DIY if you want to go the "direct route", but I wouldn't be surprised if you tried to DIY a similar design and cost of parts started getting into the $3000 mark at least. If we are using the 307A as a reference, I wouldn't be suprised if we are talking in the area of $1500 in iron alone. That's output transformers, input transformers (possibly), power transformer, choke...you know Jack from Electraprint and though his costs are reasonable for custom stuff iron adds up very fast. Let's take the filament supply - 307A I believe he used the constant current sources from the hifi filament supply or whatever it is, that is I think maybe $250 for just the filament supplies. Let's say Pete and Todd are using their own version or custom version of it, whatever it may be. Creating a high quality filament supply that is constant current DC and able to supply whatever amps you need, at least 2-3 amps I would imagine is not easy and is not cheap. Factor in labor (which IMO is a legitimate charge and if it takes you 10 hours to build one or whatever you should charge whatever you charge for labor). Let's say for argument's sake it takes 10 hours to build. I think an high quality engineer like Pete's background is worth $50/hour of labor IMO. I know Craig has gone as low as $25/hour for labor on some of his gear which is his perogative. So taking $50/hour for labor that is at least $500 just for labor alone, assuming it only takes 10 hours to build. Oh and David before you swipe back, think about what you as a lawyer charge per hour, or if you would be willing to offer free counsel on the phone or in person (I will take a guess and assume a lawyer can average anywhere between $200-$500 per hour, which again is your thing and your entitled to it but I personally don't mind a high quality engineer charging $50 /hour for their labor). I still haven't even touched on parts like resistors, capacitors, random PCB's for a CCS load, wiring, input jacks, output jacks, knobs, switches. etc. I'll throw out that random stuff like that is probably around the $500-$1000 mark, again DIYers excuse me if my numbers are off. Oh we need a chassis. That I am positive can be anywhere between $300-$500 as the metal needs to be bought, has to be designed, custom machined, etc. Adding up the numbers above and going conservative, I guess at least $3000 in parts. Then add distribution and profit etc. and its okay. I don't mean to sound like a know it all and guys like Nate and luvdunhill could probably be more accurate but I have been going through a process of having a custom amp built for me, which some of you are aware of, and I simply am aware of how much stuff really costs when you want something high end. Not sure how my amp compares to Pete and Todd's beast but my amp alone has $2000 in parts all detailed by invoice and everything, so yes I can imagine that the pinnacle is what it is.
  4. Nice - I guess what I was alluding to was that I would be lucky to have even close to 30 minutes of total listening time for the whole event, so I might as well allocate it towards that amp...and considering I am an organizer I do what I want!
  5. I do like the look of the older TTVJ 307A which honestly looked very good in person. I know I will be too busy to listen to anything as I run around but I will make it a goal to get 30 minutes on the apex/pinnacle/top of the mountain whatever amp for sure.
  6. Thanks guys - I actually went ahead and upgraded to the latest OS through Itunes. Two things: 1) I do feel things are running much faster 2) My tethering still works
  7. Thank you for acknowledging that, as I thought I was crazy...now I realize ATT are just being punks.
  8. Really? Why is that?
  9. Iphone update question: On my 3G I still have the old 3.0 OS, is there any reason why I should NOT update it to the newest 3.1? I do have the tethering currently but honestly I don't really use it... Iphone rant of the week: So radioshack is now an iphone retailer through AT&T. Sales person tells me they offer a trade in for my old 3G for $170, and can upgrade to the 3GS for $30 more at $199. Obviously need to be in your upgrade time, which I tell the person is in February. Sales person says that they are offering promotion and rather than the normal 18 month upgrade timeframe, they are making it at 9 months, which I qualify. So lady goes into system, and nope, still lists february as my upgrade date. She calls ATT, no budge, though they acknowledge the promotion, they can't help me. I call ATT myself, nope, they won't honor it. I get close with the 3rd rep who offers their ATT upgrade advantage program, but alas, they only offer certain phones, no 3GS. My guess is they are saving their 3GS promotion for new customers, and could care less about me who has been with them since the cingular days and took advantage of their 3G $99 promotion.
  10. Already tried...no luck But, I will have a new job (after being RIF'd from my current job) as well as a new baby coming our way! (September 1st)
  11. Happy belated Kevin, you are awesome. Our birthdays are next to each other's..scary
  12. Speaking of which, Doug finally got my amp in a condition for me to take home yesterday, woo hoo! None of the relays quite work, and the autoformer phase splitter output is causing a huge grounding issue into my F1, but headphone wise sounds great Thank you everyone for the well wishes.

Jim will confirm but she was responding to why they originally could not get a room for the 3rd. But I believe they have added more rooms on the 3rd for us. "Otherwise", the 4th and 5th is also available is how I take it.

Room update straight from the hotel sales manager: "We ran out of rooms in your block on the 3rd, which we had more put into today. Otherwise there are guest rooms for the 4th and 5th."
  16. Holy batman that is pretty freaking sick. Will need to investigate and add to list for convincing wife. Oh my. You can upload your own PDF's. I literally can scan whatever I want from my choral library (which is quite extensive) and upload it all to an ipad. I think I am going to faint.
  17. Finally had a chance to check out the ipad at the apple store downtown chicago, we stayed overnight after watching a show. I loved it, and can definitely see myself using it as my sole tool for internet and email, plus all the other stuff it has. The thing is pretty blazing fast, going from menu to menu and screen to screen, as well as entering and exiting programs and safari was like lightning. I do extremely well with the keyboard. And of course I love how the general interface is incredibly intuitive. Challenge is convincing the wife to get me one for my birthday next week
  18. posted here before, but here it is again to highlight some of the issues that are present in the SHA-1, at least in stock form. Also, I would say Doug's modifications are probably the most in depth to date, whereas other SHA-1 mods like Carlo's have traditionally been just replacing caps. ecp.cc
  19. cathode biased I think is the official term.

  21. EDIT: Above measurement is from Nelson Pass, not sure if it is with the F1 or not (most likely)
  22. DX45's, the typical alerions come with dx55's, and these alerions are his demo model, the very first pair that Terry Cain built for him - let's just say I got a pretty sick deal Meridian 508.24, into a Firstwatt F1.
  23. Finally bit the bullet and picked up a dream speaker of mine for a long time. I was able to unload my hornshoppe horns and while they were great for the price, the resolution and detail retrieval of the lowthers is in a completely different world. Lightning speed, incredibly dynamic, beautiful top end, wonderful imaging. I am also very happy with the bass response, in due to the alerion enclosure really maximizing the low end output, coupled with the Firstwatt F1, the combo is really well matched to each other.

Mods - if there is a way we can edit the first post in this thread to include the link I would appreciate it.
