  1. The thing to remember about variacs is that the current rating is the key parameter, not the kVA power rating. So at half voltage, you can still only draw 5A, same at 10% (so 11.5V) it is still 5A. The kVA rating is only of relevance when set to 100% of output. For that unit, the absolute maximum current is 6A and it was originally specced at 120V - so the absolute maximum is 720VA at an ambient of less than 50C (122F) The zero output current power dissipation of the W5MT is 9W at 60Hz. So it will run a bit warm even with nothing connected to the output terminals. A mate who has a beast of a variac, 3 phase 28A per phase. He has breakers, switchable primary current limiting lamps, and primary and secondary overcurrent breakers on the set to 32A. It is all boxed up to prevent any major fault condition causing a hazard. He is a bit foggy about what he uses such an animal for.
  2. That is a good price for a 1kVA variac.
  3. Not sure if those are woofers, tweeters or hooters
  4. Happy birthday!
  5. Have a great day, Todd!
  6. For a single sentence the first one packs a punch on so many levels.
  7. The ones with ears facing in opposite directions are politically neutral - both left and right facing. Or perhaps it is the old Startrek joke about Kirk having three ears, the left ear, the right ear and the final front ear.....
  8. Bit of surgery, and away you go
  9. Just don't ask the waiter if he has a knob of butter
  10. Always worth waiting for
  11. You're a fine looking chap. Good luck in the interview! In any photo I alas always look like a manic axe murderer. Amuses my family no end.
  12. This appeared yesterday on the Tekscopes mailing list: "I have excellent results using a small amount of butter..."
  13. We survived that in the mid 70's, and got to our 39th wedding anniversary yesterday.
  14. Have a great day!
  15. 135dB at 1 metre for one. So 138dB for two. To find out how much blood can come out your ears and how quickly your eyes pop out.
  16. Active crossover, 2400W for the bottom cab, 2400W for the bass units in the top cab, 550W for the mid and 275W for the tweeter. 330lb weight for the top cab and 308lb for the bottom (290 kg in all, 638 lb). And that is just one - double for stereo. Bit of an animal, really. Oh yes - they are British
  17. This thread is so weird, so head case. Love it
  18. I told my son and daughter about Chester Bennington, and talked to my son today on the phone. His take was that yes, it was a real tragedy but he was not really surprised; he said "in hindsight, listening to some recent Linkin Park last night, Bennington was pretty anguished". And apparently a good friend of his in another band (Chris Cornell) killed himself in the same way (by hanging) in May, which may have been a major contributing factor.
  19. Salad fingers is such a disturbing series.
  20. The global kitten. Would you want to be Australia?
  21. There is a long European tradition going back to the middle ages (and possibly before) in blood sausages: In England, Black Pudding (there is also white pudding, also an ancient recipe of pork meat and fat, suet, bread and oatmeal) In Germany Blutwurst In France Boudin Noir They are all subtly different. As you might tell I am something of a fan of this delicacy. I have not yet tried the Spanish variety though, but plan to when next in Spain.
  22. Yes indeed it did. Took an hour or more to reliably charge. I actually wired the same neon flasher circuit that is in the ESL63 to monitor charging current/leakage. Visible through the rear grille. Once it was down to one flash per second or so the films were charged and leakage was confirmed as very small.
  23. Belated happy birthday Jose! Love the blood sausage - in the UK called Black Pudding - absolutely delicious.
  24. That is absolutely brilliant. I just wish he'd return to his roots in stage acting too - I think he would be totally superb. But I said the same thing about Patrick Stewart when I watched him play Jean Luc Picard; I think my words were "I'd walk over hot coals to see him act in Shakespeare" - and we've now seen him six or seven times on stage, including a superb MacBeth in a studio theatre seating 200. An extract from the film version: In fact, in that same theatre we've tickets to see Ian McKellern play Lear later this year. Can hardly wait.
