  1. Bump. Update: ordered the SVS SB12-Plus sub today, should fill in the bottom end nicely.
  2. http://www.craigslist.org/about/best/sfo/526482501.html A comparison of current presidential candidates to Star Wars characters.
  3. AudioEngine just came out with a matching sub too for the A5 monitors. Spec say they go down to 30Hz, which is decent for a sub of that size. It should make a fairly decent computer system.
  4. Oops, forgot to include Isis, which I already love.
  5. Let me just list some bands that I like and ask what other bands are in a similar vein. 1) Godspeed You! Black Emperor 2) Mogwai 3) Stereolab 4) Sigur Ros What are some bands that make music in a similar vein?
  6. Sold a couple of things on the 'Gon, and both times the transaction went without a hitch.
  7. Headphones: I bought and sold RS-1s and L3000s. I really liked the both of them, but the L3000s are absolutely fantastic. I sold the L3000s because I was/am listening to speakers much more. This is the year that I realized that I am really a speakers person at heart. Headphones just don't sound satisfying anymore, at least not completely satisfying. Also I think I bought and sold a W5000 and realized that except for the L3000s, I really don't like Audio-Technica headphones. Amps: I sold my PPX3. Later I ended up with a Dynahi, which I then sold. As of now, my only headphone amp is the AE-2, but that will also soon be sold because of the Zana Deux. Source: This is where I made the biggest jump: went from soundcard to Lavry DA-10, then to Stello DP200, and finally the Esoteric DV-60. Conclusion: I am a speaker guy. Next year: I might sell my current speakers because my room is too small, and having too much gear really takes up valuable space. I might have to go back to a headphones only setup until I graduate and move out into my own place in June. The plan is that once I graduate and get a real job and a real place, I can then do some serious research/audition and go for a speaker setup that I can be content with for a while. Also, might get the AudioEngine speakers which are small and can fit nicely on my bookshelf, and whatever new-fangled thing that Sennheiser is announcing at CES.
  8. Has anyone here ever done his own needle drops? And so, how are the results?
  9. Um, what? Here's how I see things: 1)Deepak said that he didn't find the DA10 musical 2) You seem to imply that musicality is just euphemism for non-linearity. 3) A whole bunch of us try to explain to you what we mean by "musical" and that it doesn't have anything to do with neutrality. 4) You imply that because we don't hear the DA10 as "neutral" that we must be impaired by consumption of alcohol. 5) And now you are implying that we are co-dependent I don't get it. No one here is saying that YOU don't hear your DA10 as musical and neutral and whatever other superlatives that you might want to use. So just because we don't hear the Lavry the way you do, that somehow mean we must not care or want neutrality in our sources?
  10. Not sleeping tonight Reks? I'm only up because I have to write a philosophy finals paper

    Hi, I'm new.

It's okay: I go to the same school, and am Asian.

    Hi, I'm new.

Yet you go to a college full of over-achieving, over-compensating Asian kids who all want to become lawyers, doctors, engineers, MBAs, and I-Bankers. LOL.
  13. I never said that the ~$1000 are not musical. I just said that it's hard to achieve the right mix of musicality and resolution in a $1000 package. I just don't see why that is a controversial statement. The most musical source I've heard in that price range is the Stello DA100. It had great PRaT, decent dynamics, and conveyed the essence of the music reasonably well. But it also had a mid-bass bump, the soundstage is somewhat constricted, the treble is slightly rolled off. If you think your Lavry is musical, then enjoy it by all means. I've owned the Lavry before, and in comparison with other sources I've encountered in that price range, it wasn't particularly musical to me, meaning that I thought it sounded kind of sterile and flat (not in terms of frequency response, but in the more descriptive term). All I'm trying to say is that as I went up on the ladder, I've encountered sources that sound more musical to me while not having the same kind of deficiencies that I heard in the lower segment. That isn't to bash the lower segment; it's just saying that sometimes you get what you pay for.
  14. Take it in whatever fashion you want, but I've extensively heard several "popular" choices in the ~$1000 segment: the DAC1, Lavry DA10, the VDA-2, a Stello DA100, an Arcam CD73, etc. They all had strengths and weaknesses and trade-offs, which is expected. I never said they all sucked; I just said that the higher up you go, the less compromise there should be. Is that supposed to be "faith-based" and "mystical"? I just think you are working under a false assumption, that there must be some kind of dichotomy, i.e., bright = detailed, euphonic=mushy, which I think is crap, because an ideal source wouldn't have these either-ors.
  15. All I can say is that it's not a strict, zero-sum choice: I've heard plenty of good sources that is both musical AND linear. Granted, those sources are pretty expensive, but I believe such a balance can be achieved. I just don't think you can get that at the ~$1000 level
  16. Haha, looks like someone got his cherry popped... Sorry, but everyone who goes to college goes through this at least once, so it's bound to happen sometimes. I once vomited all over someone's new LCD tv at a party, but thankfully I never saw that person again... As for your parents, just explain what happened. They will be very upset, but they probably won't disown you. As for the hangover, try sleeping, taking a hot shower, drinking Gatorade, and taking aspirin for the headache. But time is the only effective cure.
  17. You are talking to the wrong crowd here...
  18. You press the "play area" button on the remote, which switches between dvd-video and dvd-audio and/or 5.1/stereo layers. That is how it's done on my DV-60, which is just the SA-60 with video.
  19. With transmitter tubes, I can finally turn it up to 11.
  20. Come on man, you know you want to sell that to me
  21. So I don't know if this has already been covered, but on Head-Direct's site, it lists the supply bias as 600V, so does that mean that if I use regular Stax amps with 580V that the phones will be under-biased?
