This is what KG said earlier in the thread wrt to the externally mounted heatsink version when I inquired. It does require a lot more skill and tools. I'm perfectly happy with the onboard heatsink version after he posted that. On another note if there is an interest in group buy for the semis I can spearhead that in another month when I have a lot more free time. Though I see some of them are already ~ $8 a piece at BDent with no price breaks at 50.

Tyll you are spot on. At one point someone discovered HD600s where shipping with HD650 drivers from Amazon (way back in the day this is probably rectified by now). No one could tell until they removed the earpads and foam. NwAvGuy if you want something very different from the Sennheisers try the Stax Lambda line. An SR-Lambda is a very good headphone and the cheaper amps or transformer boxes are good matches.IMO the SR-Lambda is a big stepup from any Sennheiser (with the exception of HD800 possibly).

Hate to say this but the HD580/600/650 also have a tendency to get cracked headbands.

Heh I've probably had many, many hundred pints of it in Ireland. I would agree with that study in general. Though I think the bottles in the US are quite good.

I agree what you're saying about speakers. Sennheiser makes great headphones all around, the HD570 and HD590 are just the anomalies. But their sound signatures can be all over the place, the HD650 and HD800 which were or are both flagships sound nothing alike. The HD580/HD600HD/650 are good headphones and not like the Dr Dre headphones. It has been a while since I heard the HD595 and I sold them pretty quickly, but I don't think they were that bad either.

I would never say the HD590 are in the same league as the HD600. The HD590 was one of the worst headphones I owned. I give them an A+ for comfort, but they were muddy with poor mids.

I might be interested if they are pre-tapped and depending on cost. Though the onboard heatsink version will be a lot easier and cheaper to build.

There is some funny stuff there, like the guy that thinks running an audio reproduction tube preamp is like a guitar preamp which is intended to over drive and distort the signal a lot. TBH with the finer points of HDCD I would trust Filburt over many of those HydrogenAudio guys.

yes a bit embarrased by the IR remark. ipad functionality with no screen/knobs seems cool to me. I'm in for whatever volume control you feel is the most transparent. I intend to use this preamp in a high end speaker setup.
