  1. Kent included a pic of the PCB, circling the resistor that needs to be replaced. He also sent me the necessary resistor. I used a camera to take a picture of his pics, so they are not super clear but hopefully this helps: Also, here is exactly what Kent said regarding the resistor in an email to me before he proceeded with repairs:
  2. Amazon.com: Lizard (CD + DVD Audio): King Crimson: Music I enjoyed the CD/DVD-A of Red so much I decided to pick this one up. Not sure whether to get the Deluxe version of ITCOTCK or go for the full 6 disc box set.
  3. happy birthday!
  4. I always miss my GS1000s. I am so fully aware of their sonic flaws but I can't help but want to own a pair and smell those bagel pads. because they smell great.
  5. Craig, I love reading the details of your Quad journey, even if I don't understand all of it. Thanks for sharing. As I said earlier in this thread, Kent swapped out a resistor when he repaired my speaker that he says will help the speaker last longer but will also lower the volume. Therefore the repaired speaker is quieter then the stock speaker. He sent some very detailed instructions and a new resistor for me to try to install in the stock Quad. I even went and bought an iron from Radio Shack and opened the speaker up to attempt the resistor swap, but I just ended up laughing at myself when I could understand even the most basic instructions (apparently a "jumper" isn't the same on a Quad ESL-63 as on a CD-ROM drive). So for fear of electrocuting myself or destroying the speaker, I closed it back up and am just using the balance controls. This is a bit of a bummer, since it takes away some from the midrange purity of the speakers, which is what I initially found so amazing about them. Having said that the midrange is still pretty magical, just not AS magical. I had some amazing experiences this week listening to King Crimson's "Red" and "Starless and Bible Black". Those are some outstanding sounding records that the Quads just love.
  6. So the right driver on my HF-2 started going out intermittently last month. I told myself to go ahead and send it in before the year/warranty was up, but then it started working again fine and honestly I forgot it ever went out. Well this week it went out completely and I can't get it to start up again. I honestly think it is a connection issue and not a driver issue, because before I could just move the wire around and it would start working again. Now I am 6 days out of the one year warranty (purchased date 5/15/09). I've emailed Grado and they quickly responded (as they always do) with instructions for mailing in the cans. I do not expect them to repair under warranty (nor would I have any hard feelings if they didn't, one year is one year) but we'll see. It recently occurred to me this is the third Grado I've had a driver go out on me. First was the right driver on the RS-1, which actually wasn't Grado's error, it was blown up by my PPX3 and/or a bad tube (years later I tested the tube and it tests strong, who knows). Grado fixed it for $100. Next was the driver on my GS1000, which they repaired extremely quickly under warranty and mailed back very fast. I guess when your quality control isn't the best you have to have excellent customer service. here's hoping I have another good Grado service experience.
  7. PAX.AM \ Welcome extremely limited vinyl pressing, snag it if you like this kind of stuff.
  8. word. I think Tallahassee puts you about 7 hours from NOLA, maybe less? I'm about 2 hours from NOLA. Its a ways away but you should start considering a trip for Jazzfest. Always a good time. But I go over there several times a year anyway for shows. In fact just this weekend I bought tickets to go see Tool there this summer.
  9. rest in peace. one of the truly great rock vocalists. i am saddened i will never get to see him live.
  10. KG could get RAM to mod it, then it would be expensive enough.
  11. Consider Phlebas by Iain Banks my first culture novel, I'm enjoying it. Feels a bit like watching a sci-fi television series, the way he kind of leaves the main plot for about 40% of the book, but the tangent was so entertaining I don't mind.
  12. greatest city on the planet. my go to restaraunt is Mandinas on Canal. free parking and great poboys. for finer dining, Galatoires is a classic and hard to beat. bar wise, after you get done with Bourbon St, hike to the back of the quarter to Frenchmen street, a much less touristy strip with lots of cool spots. what specific dates will you be in town? I'll recommend you some cool local music, maybe we could even meet up for a show.
  13. thanks for the write up, very interesting read.
  14. Indeed, a fine display of rhetoric from all sides!
  15. i am enjoying this thread very much, almost as much as the thread that homo gay newbie started.

  19. i like the idea of getting a complete rebuild and being done with it, because then ideally you should be set for 15-20 years.
  20. qs&d is the most expensive ESL refurbisher. nice guys, quality work, just way expensive. check out Kents pricelist at estatsolutions.com for a better feel for the market rates. I've heard great things about Wayne piquet as well.

  22. I'm in my friends wedding at battery park this weekend. in Memphis airport right now with the GF. we have the rehearsal tonight, and the wedding tomorrow, but we'll have a smattering of free time this afternoon and tomorrow before 5:30. any recommendations for things to do/places for breakfast or lunch, especially in the general area of the Millenium Hilton @ 55 Church St, would be appreciated. thanks!
  23. which quads?
  24. skinny puppy - vivisectvi vinyl, on the headphone rig.
  25. i guess by "best" i mean "cheapest". thanks to both of you for your responses. the promise of a W5000 with more bass really has me intrigued, and its been a while since I've bought a headphone.
