Yes, but with the news that came out last week, I wasn't going to jump the gun after waiting this long and ask for a refund only days before they're supposedly shipping. That would be stupid. If I don't have it by the end of the month, I will take that route.

That was also my impression of the D5000, but with two pairs that had plenty of time on them (agile_one's and Thrice's). They were okay, but nothing to whip out the wallet over. That's why I was hoping the D2000 would come close, as the price would have made them worthwhile for a take-to-work rig. Unfortunately, I didn't find them all that similar, and...well...you know the rest.

Mine's a later model of well. mikeg and I actually did a comparison of your pair and mine, and they sounded the same. Purk has done some pretty extensive reseach into R10s and he learned that the idea that later pairs are bass heavy and early pairs are the lighter version is false. There are actually three separate drivers (he showed me Sony documentation indicating same), so three versions of R10s are out there in the world. Here's where my memory may be faulty, but I'm pretty sure he told me that the suspected reason is that individual buyers in Japan could actually choose which sound they preferred. Pretty nice, huh? Purk, come on in here with the real scoop, and I apologize if I mis-remembered anything.

Nice impressions, Dan. Other than your source, I've listened to your specific rig, and know how good it is. It's the very one that made me want R10s. Although I think my setup's reached 80% of that sound, I still remember my first listening session with the SDS and R10s, and I think much of what I've been trying to do ever since then is recreate that moment. I'm not there yet. Congratulations to you on finally getting the R10s and SDS together. Regarding the bass, your thoughts echo my own. I personally don't understand what people mean when they talk about lack of bass. I've only heard five pair, mostly similar in sound, if not identical (though Purk's and mine were noticeably different), but I have yet to encounter a bass light pair. The bass is not visceral, like with the PS1s or L3000s, but other than with a few bands or cds, in which I'm looking for a wicked attack or punch me in the gut bass, I find it near perfect. I'm not sure what you mean, though, by "honky" in the upper mids. I can't find honkiness anywhere in the same room as my R10s, let alone in the mids. Since you've only had them one day, I look forward to hearing your future thoughts. Keep us posted. EDIT: I love the polite understatement of your thread title. It's really rather sweet.

Well, the word is that the first Diablos have shipped with more going out this week and next. Also, it looks like we get to choose between black and silver. That's a nice surprise, though how we let Larry know what our choices are remains a mystery since he doesn't exactly read emails. I want a black Diablo so those little blue lights on top really look like eyes

I guess if you're going to do it, go BIG I pre-ordered, but since the well had run dry, I won't be paying him until he has a few more ready. Truth is I'm wavering. I'm going to check agile_one's out at the Florida meet on the 27th and make a decision from there. I want to upgrade my source, recable my Ks, and buy a new subwoofer for my Abbys. Can't do it if I buy the fugly phones...but I want the fugly phones.

They're JBL 6328Ps and I have to say, they sound really nice. I got to hang out with them for awhile in Sarasota. Mike actually took a measuring tape out to place the chair in just the right spot. I'd check out any recommendation he gives. He has pretty impeccable tastes and great ears. I don't agree with him on what we like some of the time, but he's always dead on with what's what.

I thought you got his R10s moons ago. Congrats and enjoy!!! I saw that you'd posted new feedback and made my assumption based on the fact I thought the 701s were the only headphones he now had. Plus, he's in love with those JBL nearfield monitors, bought three (yes, count 'em) turntables and is now out hunting down vinyl wherever he can. No time for headphones. He's bringing everything to the Oct meet. The 701s are not my fav, but Gene let me have his Jena ALO recabled pair for a few weeks, and my opinion on them has changed greatly. The recable and a couple tube switches really filled them out, even the bottom end. They were pretty impressive, and I totally get why people love them, but for me to get something new, they would have to trounce my R10s, K1000s, or 650/600, or seriously arouse my curiosity, like the TakeT has. They don't do that.
