  3. I have..briefly... I haven't owned them, but I've had my eye on them for bedroom speakers when we buy a house. I did hear them a few times at a friend's house. They are good for what they are. I'd be willing to bet the Quad's grawk mentioned sound better. I don't have much other experience with powered speakers so, I don't have any basis for comparison. My rec. comes more from the iPod angle as well as the fact that they have an additional AC socket on the back for the airport express. So a combination of features and sound quality.

  7. "They" say pre-orders this Thursday... we'll see. I'm torn on the 16GB vs. 32GB. I can't see this replacing my iPhone for music playback... the iPhone is more portable. But for video use yes... but I'm not sure I would need more than 16GB. But the possible 3G radio seems compelling. So 16GB + 3G or 32GB without 3G.........
  8. Holy shit, we had one of those timex jobs... dad got it from a guy at work... did it have a tape deck for programs? If so, we had that. Hooked it up to a TV with an RF switch if I recall.

  19. There were other issues at play as well. Music piracy was (and probably still is) a much bigger issue than piracy for eBooks. I have to wonder if there was some market research on Apple's part to help determine the sweet spot for pricing digital downloads. I wonder if they felt like they needed to keep the price low to get people to pay for that which they were getting for free via file sharing. Good experience plus the right price=sale. Then once things get going, pricing and DRM gets negotiated. Just speculating of course... Certainly there are parallels, but the issues surrounding digital downloading music vs. books is a little different. Music is easy to copy to a computer and there were already devices that could play non-downloaded music (music ripped from CDs). Digital books is different.... you can't copy an analog book without a significant amount of effort and/or hardware (at least initially) and the devices for digital books are leading the market for the content and not vice versa. Add to that the fact that there isn't a compelling and ubiquitous format for eBook (like MP3) and the fact that the publishing industry might actually try to learn from the music industry's failure to embrace new tech and distribution models. So yes, on the surface it seems like an inconsistency, but it also seems like there's more to it than that.
  20. It's yet to be seen how the new iBookstore will operate... but it might (I hope) be better than Amazon. With Amazon, you are locked into the Kindle and Kindle related software. I'm hoping that Apple talked to the publishers and will do the same thing they did with music.... ok, you want variable pricing, how about no DRM then. They are going with the ePub format which isn't proprietary at it's core, so that's a good thing. I think Jobs did mention that you could wrap an eBook in the ePub format with DRM... we'll see.

  24. Thanks all! Cool Al, I seem to remember that! Happy birthday to your son as well. And fear not my lion-based modular mechanical hero from the future... I will take care of myself. I already took a few extra minutes in the shower... all for me. On a completely unrealted note: Last night my father mentioned that a friend of his invited him over for a little scotch tasting. So we popped over for a few hours last night to try so excellent libations: This one is older than I am: All of them were quite good.
  25. Up at 5:30 to take care of Abi. That's ok though. We're hanging out on the couch listening to jazz and loving life together. Best birthday gift I could ever get!
