  1. I don't know, seems straightforward enough. And besides, there's that "inversely proportional to how ugly it is to how good it sounds" myth that needs perpetuating. No, wait, that's headphones.
  2. Well, if you sell the L3000, and then decide to sell the EMP because you don't need it any more, please sell it to me first. (I.E., "Dibs!") (Yes, I know, unlikely that you will sell the EMP -- it is a nice totable amp, and it works well with other headphones. But...you know...just in case -- I want to state that my interest is there.) I'm going to start tuberolling my amps to see which one drives it the best. Any theories on why the EMP works so well with it?
  3. I agree that I don't make a lot of sense -- I'm having a hard time describing this to someone who hasn't heard it for themselves. It's not really a rolloff, it's...it's like a darkness, but without any encroachment on the detail...again, it might just be a reverse plateau, if that makes sense, and I'm not hearing the lowered upper half the way I'd like. And maybe it's not "busy music" that triggers it, but "bassy music". And I'm not hearing it as a midrange suckout, but it does affect vocals. So I don't know...maybe it is...
  4. Okay, I've been listening to these a lot, and I gotta say something. These may have the weirdest tonality of any headphone I liked, ever. What is it with these things? It still has that cleanliness -- it appears to, with almost every amplifier I've thrown at it (I've thrown: the Singlepower Supra++, Creek OBH-11SE, Wheatfield HA-2, and the Radii HAP-02). And the bass appears to come and go -- not really, I think it's more the fact that it's noticeable that comes and goes, depending on the music. And it still has that razor sharp separation/isolation/what's the word for when you can pick out each instrument, but there's no soundstage? But the upper frequencies sound a bit rolled off -- and when I say rolled off, I mean seriously -- I thought the DAC was out of sync again. And I don't think there's anything wrong with them, because I compared them to Hirsch's, and Hirsch's do the same thing. They're a little bit more broken in, so they have a better upper frequency extension, but other than that, they sound the same. So if it was the bass, I'd say there was an impedance dip that I'm hearing, because the frequency response appears to be a function of the music -- I.E. the busier the music, the more apparent this characteristic is audible. But it appears to be in the upper region. Haven't done any frequency sweeps yet, but I have a feeling it won't be audible with frequency sweeps, as that is not busy music. Has anyone done a frequency response of this yet? Tyll? How about an impedance sweep? Does Headroom even do that for other headphones? Does anyone have the capability to measure an impedance sweep of these? Is it possible that there's something touching the drivers from the other side? Would that manifest itself this way? Or do I just need a better amp. Of the above amps, guess which amp drove it the best (so far, without tuberolling): the Radii HAP-02 (go figure). And by "the best", I don't mean "the best overall", I mean "the best with regards to this characteristic". I haven't heard it with the Earmax Pro yet (Hirsch was going to tuberoll it), but I would really like to, since that was the combination I heard it and fell in love with it on. Hirsch, did you listen to yours again on the EMP? Or do I just need to burn it in again? The previous owner didn't use it much towards the end. I've heard from another L3000 owner, and he said that he heard the same thing, and that it took him a year to get used to it. Is there any discussion of this over there at that other place?
  5. See, now I know it's not Tuberoller, because he never responds to any of my posts. Maybe it's Marc, with a spell- and grammar- checker. And a hat-checker.
  6. And without the cool special effects.
  7. I'm beginning to think this guy's not tuberoller. That said -- this guy sure is full of tuberoller the way tuberoller was full of himself. Maybe he's tuberoller pretending not to be tuberoller. In fact, that guy in the mask probably isn't even tuberoller, just to make us think that it isn't him.
  8. It's not so much the music that matters, it's the mood. When I'm in the mood for a clean, dry, almost boring presentation, I go for the HP-2's. RS-1's sound like they introduce euphony to me. They are especially complimentary to vocals, female or otherwise.
  9. No...I think he eschews obfuscation as well. Obfuscation of feedback would be Berning's domain.
  10. Well, I didn't dislike it...but neither did I like it enough to buy one.
  11. I thought Mikhail eschewed feedback...?
  12. You'd need a time machine (or a DVD player). Probably the single biggest uprising after a cancellation, ever. The movie would not have been otherwise made.
  13. Headphones (other than the K1000) have a soundstage on normal, non-binaural music.
  14. "What gives?" I'm afraid I don't understand the question. Watch the series, then think about my comparison and decide for yourself whether or not it has or lacks merit. I cannot explain to you the series -- you really have to see it. It's like a western set in space. Action/comedy/drama. Dramadiction. Acomtionrama. Or something. What's the word for "beast with three heads"? Oh yeah, Cerberus. It's a Cerberus.
  15. I recently picked up the Alexander Nevsky/Lieutenant Kije SACD...but I was listening on headphones, so soundstage was lost on me.
  16. Also, it should be mentioned that apparently there are two versions of the Complete Series on DVD, is that right? I'm glad someone mentioned that here, because otherwise I wouldn't have known, and might've gotten the wrong one...(the older one apparently didn't have all the episodes that the later one did, or something?)...
  17. Yes, it really was, and you really should. I own the movie, and will eventually get the series (and I rarely buy DVD's). I liked the movie, except for one or two minor details (for example: they didn't do any of the long shots in space that I liked so much during the show; the only time there wasn't any sound effects in space was the first few seconds of the movie [i think] -- it was a big deal to me in the series, because despite it's fantastical nature, it gave it that attention to detail and realism that I like so much...and they changed the guy who did the soundtrack music), but these are minor criticisms. From the perspective of "storytelling" (which is first and foremost to me), I definitely think it succeeded. There's also a comic book in between the two that explain certain discontinuities between the two, Those Left Behind. I've heard the movie criticized as being an extended episode -- and it kind of is, but I don't think of that as a bad thing. It was sufficiently "big" enough for me.
  18. The Skipper is Mal. There are Gilligan traits in both Jayne and Wash; professor traits in both Simon and Book. The contrast of Ginger's glam and Mary Ann's plain-ness in Inara & Kaylee (and in both cases, there is still a friendship/comraderie). I have no idea who Mr. and Mrs. Howell would be associated with, but Simon definitely has an air of nobility/snobbiness about him, so perhaps Simon/River. Zoe doesn't really have a counterpart, other than she's sort of the second in command. But there are more characters in Firefly/Serenity, so of course they're not going to all match up. ...or maybe it's Lost In Space... Thoughts?
  19. That's some fucked up shit right there, dude.
  20. I have two OBH-11SE's. One of them is broken -- it's mono; other than that, it sounds fine. I got it used. I suspect the previous owner was messing with it. There appears to be an additional jumper from Q9 to Q11 (similar to the one from Q5 to Q6) -- could this be the cause? Or is it a red herring, some sort of tuning thing? I don't see a stray dollop of solder anywhere, but I could be blind. Does anyone have any ideas? Does anyone have a schematic of the thing? Tell me what to measure and where, and I will.
