The analog thread.
So here's a vinyl noob question of note -- why are some records so much noisier than others? This morning I listened to a couple of mid-80s LPs that had clearly been knocked about a bit in their lives, but after cleaning were very quiet and generally pleasureable to hear. Then I put on a brand-new "special edition" 180g release that supposedly got the kid glove treatment in both production and pressing, yet it's like the needle's tracking over sandpaper. The surface noise is so high it's pretty much unlistenable.

I'm thinking you can get to New York pretty easily from most parts of Pennsyltucky and a weekend exploring The Blind Tiger, Spuyten Duyvil and the Ginger Man might be in order. What do you reckon, Dinny?

Amp/DAC recommendation for D2000 & DT990
I think we can safely posit that no Grado family member was ever in too much of a hurry to stop and pick up a penny spotted on the sidewalk.

My memory might be wildly off base but I'm pretty sure it was discussed somewhere here not that long ago. EDIT: Here's we go.

Isn't Joe charging, like, $2K for HP1000 refreshers now? Making hay while the sun still shines, I guess.

The Quad thread
Asked because I read the Ken Kessler spoogefest where he swears there's ZOMG moar bass with the newer models. Always take reviews with ze grain of salt, but he has heard probably as many Quads as anyone. Maybe he was pitching his book idea at the time! http://www.quad-hifi.co.uk/downloads/HFN%20ESL%20review%2006.pdf

Don't listen to the Monkey. He's a muck-savage DACshite. Are you using flats on the HP1s? It helps a lot with comfort and is the way to go sonically, too, though it took me a while to see the light on that myself.

Because you just made clear that you have the resources to do better on the criteria you set out -- if you care to -- than you are ever going to do with the Denons, which are not particularly good headphones to begin with. Stax SR-007 - Wikiphonia Stax SRM-717 - Wikiphonia Otherwise, you don't really have many more places to go with the D7000s. If DIY is out, then that rules out an AMB Beta 22, which would probably be the standard recommendation. On the tube side, you could try the Eddie Current Zana Deux.

Sell the Denons and the HR and get some Stax O2s and a 717.
