  1. Haha Tina Turner made u sign a non-disclosure agreement huh? darn
  2. ooh, what is this? your diy drivers?
  3. Not entirely sure, Im using the actual Fostex wool biscuits from my NAD and Aiwa vintage T50 variants. I guess something like the wool stuffing used in roof insulation would be similarish...(but careful with handling, do not inhale).
  4. Sounds like they are an elecret with built in transformers! nice. The KH-72 and 92 were Kenwood/Trio orthos from what is presumably the same line up, they use large drivers completely different to the KH-83 generation. (from photos they seem to be kinda Akai/T30-ish) The KH-52 and 32 I think were dynamics.
  5. wooow, cant wait to see what drivers are in here . Are you sure they are ortho though colin? No one lists that model as ortho, only 7x and 9x.....hmmm
  6. I used a pair of rectangular circum Pads from a 1970's Ross dynamic headphone. Btw, Im talking about the 1980 vintage T50. NOT the modern T50rp
  7. Hah stick shiny wood any anything and your there . You'll woody a cat one day.
  8. I just emailed Sankar, asking him if they would like some help in optimizing the next housing design. Im sure a few of the ortho thread memebrs collective knowledge could prove v.useful. That said, apart from the earpads (i cant tell if they are velour), the housing seems totally fine, depending on how it is implemented inside)
  9. Nice pics! Did you happen to find out what they plan to do after the first 25 run? Make their own housings then? Were the pads velour?
  10. Thanks for the impressions Icarium!! . So Head-Direct are ALSO making an orthodynamic?? This is news to me, details please Is this the Head-Direct one (the light brown woodie)?
  11. Was the engineer Sankar? or somone else? Even if the enclosures suck, can you describe the sound more? (all that really matters for the moment is if the enclosure is reasonaly rigid and fully open, which it should be). Dammit NoNoNoNoNoNo/Colin, where are you with the gazzilion snaps!!
  12. Iv seen a graph in a scientific document where the DT48 is used as a reference phone (cant find it now), it was not flat at all. it was a verryy gentle hump, and big roll off on bass and treble. The paper said they used a diffusion field eq with the DT48, I think there is a standardised Diffision field eq for it to make it flat. Im guessing most of the pros use it. It's been aorund donkeys years and is the standard. So they stick to it.
  13. Pretty much all my orthos have needed heavy damping. The exception seems to be the T50v2, which with the normal T50 damping (two discs of mineral wool) and some circumaural pads they sound quite good. I think all I need to do is experiment with circumaural pads to find the most compatible one.
  14. Heh you went from massive relfex strip and damped the f' out, to no damping! There is damping from some added magnetic effects?
  15. You and stock Yamahas!! Your the kind of person they needed in the 80's to keep their ortho programme afloat
  16. Congrats! Good luck though. I couldnt seem to reach satisfactory point with my mods. But they seem to be universally accepted as the most superior (obtainable) Yamaha. I remained convinced it was the housing holding it back....but dunno, maybe its just the mods I experienced wern't the right ones. Once you do find the time, please do update us on your mods.
  17. Hot stuff!! Who needs to decide between HD600 and K701 when you have bits of a Kingwood tree strapped to your head!! I think the whole thing looks sexy, maybe the one thing I would change is remove the blue coloured heatshrink (and would have been better if the red one wasnt so bright too), this is just me being super nitpickery, but those bright plastic colours are a bit too high contrast against the black/dark wood colour scheme. Anyway, either way, im sure Alex (and Don ) will be thrilled, you guys are awesome.
  18. thems some yummy looking cups Gary! (whats with that strange 'wing' on the baffle?)
  19. Haha, i like the way the guy on the left cant grow a mohican, so he has grown two mini ones on the edges.
  20. lol. Ya should be careful smeggs with breathin in that stuff. I hear certain woods like Cocobolo have toxic sawdust.... (well you probably knew that, but hey, just in case). I think the Kingwood youv been using is basically a Cocobolo variant...
  21. mmmmmm Cocobolo, sooo pretty. I miss my guitar :'(
