What I find more disturbing is people assuming that you need 5 watts to drive a pair of headphones when they are taking a couple mW to be ear splittingly loud. I listened happily for an hour with them off the AE2.

Well I was not comparing the planars to the HD800s at the time. I was more listening for potential than anything else at the time and I was not the only one impressed. Also they were sourced from my PMP which you may or may not like. That said different strokes for different folks as they say. For example I really don't care about the spring noise statement product or not or you don't like the qualias which I would say the planars are closer too than the HD800s. I would love to DBT the AE2 vs my GS-X since in the past I've never managed to measure an audible difference with the HD650s I assume that will likely hold with the HD800s.

Currently listening to HD800s with my AE2 (mid gain) running on battery sourced from my Bel Canto DAC3 and you know what. It sounds pretty damn amazing and at max volume is uncomfortably loud. Figured I would let my ears make their own decision and they say "it is good". So much for portables not being able to keep up.

Went to work. Tried to convince my boss once again why he should make me assistant manager..... conversation delayed until next week. Oh well. Came home listened to my 800s vs Qualias vs Omega 2 (all without EQ) and decided I still prefer the Qualia overall without any math in the loop but the HD800 are very close with the Omega in 3rd. Did some measurements of the 3 phones and posted them elsewhere on HC.

Well I listened for a while and compared them to my Qualias (both using SE) and the 800s are excellent headphones. So very smooth, detailed and excellent imaging. As a plus they fit in those cheap flight cases so that's their new storage system. That way I can keep the stock box pristine. As of right now I would give the edge to the Qualias for my preferences but that's me YMMV.

I agree it would be better if they didn't do it but I'll live with it (unless they offer an exchange over it). I rather have springs than elastomers that wear out. That said I am surprised that they do it so noticeably. One thought is that after enough motion they will settle down and stop doing it.
