  1. As I was downloading the Costco app (because I lost my card). When you see it...
  2. Enjoying it so far, although not nearly as much as A Gentleman in Moscow, which I loved.
  3. Watched the first episode of the new Star Trek series last night: Strange New Worlds. Overall I liked it a lot and feel that it has the potential to be right up there with TNG. The coolness & quality outweighed the occasional eye rolls, IMO. It had that Roddenberry feel that has been missing for a long time and I really like almost all of the cast members, especially the Big 3. I also liked all of the Easter Eggish tie-ins with the original series, pretty cool for an old Trekkie like me.
  4. These Elac's are making me smile They may be small but they're kinda HUNG (while also sporting some big juicy bass balls). Zero buyer's remorse here.
  5. Bobiverse & Project Hail Mary = same narrator (Ray Porter).
  6. ^ I really enjoyed PHM. The audiobook narration is excellent.
  7. I can't think of anything else that so successfully escapes the "contempt of familiarity", or captures so successfully both the disenchantment and enchantment of an era.
  8. I read the first one and liked it, still need to read the other 2. Also LOVED the 3BP series. Reading The Wasp Factory now. & Gravity's Rainbow. Going full immersive on the Pynchon: First I read the corresponding chapter in Weisenburger's Companion, then I read the actual chapter, then I read the online Wiki, then I listen to the chapter on audiobook, then, lastly, I look at the corresponding pages in Pictures Showing What Happens on Each Page of Thomas Pynchon's Novel Gravity's Rainbow.
  9. I have the Kobo Aura ONE (Special Edition) as well as a Kindle Voyage, both of which are a few years old now. I prefer the Kobo for it's larger (7.8") size and auto "Natural Light" feature. Most of the newer Kindles all have the warm light feature now though. I dislike the lopsided edge that was introduced with the Oasis and copied now by most of the Kobo line. I also dislike page turn buttons. For those reasons if I had to buy a new e-reader now I would probably go with the new Paperwhite.
  10. Agreed, I will take a 1-0 pitcher's duel over a 10-9 slugfest anyday.
  11. I'm working my way through Gravity's Rainbow as well. I am also using the guide and this: Full immersion baby! I am only about 10% in but I totally agree: challenging and brilliant. I can actually feel Pynchon rewiring my neurons as I read...
  12. Oh man, RIP Ursula. Such a lovely person. I always enjoyed going up to see her at Powell's for book signings and such.
  13. Multnomah Falls is a must see (stop by McMenamins Edgefield on the way). Portland has a lot of cool districts to walk around and shop/eat: 23rd st, Hawthorne, Belmont, Mississippi, Hollywood, Alberta come to mind. Powell's City of Books, of course. Chuck Palahniuk wrote Fugitives and Refugees: A Walk in Portland that includes a guide to weird places: https://www.wired.com/2016/05/what-to-do-in-portland/ Happy trails!
  14. Richard Adams author of Watership Down dies at 96. Pretty good run, RIP.
  15. I don't normally read mainstream fiction novels but this was excellent: As was this (back to my normal genre): And I'm enjoying this one on audiobook: I went to James Gleick's author event @ Powell's in support of this book. It was fun.
  16. The sequels are excellent as well: The Dark Forest & The End of Death (just published last month).
  17. I'm in. After doing so well last year, why the hell not?
  18. Hey Knucks several of your recent posts with pics just appear as broken links for me. Anyone else?
  19. ^^^ I also loved TBP and I loved the sequel, The Dark Forest, even more. Can't wait for the 3rd book!
