I don't think the BX5a are bright at all, but I don't crank them up to often. The BX8a are more than the 5a, but something called GigaSonic.com has the 8a for $349, which is a good deal. One thing to note is that the inputs are either XLR or 1/4 TRS jacks. I use an RCA -> XLR adapter cable because my office source does not have a balanced/XLR output. Works just fine. Good luck.

M-Audio BX5a or the big boys BX8a. Sweetwater.com has the 5a for $299 right now. Guitar Center was cheaper when I bought them, iirc.

Here are my new racks before putting anything on them. Core Designs (corefurniture.com) does great work, and the fact that owner Arnold Marr brought them to my house fully assembled made for a truly pleasant purchase experience. Arnold happens to be a headphone geek and has a great collection of his own. Thanks to JP#s for helping set them up.
