  1. I hope you have had a ginrific celebration!
  2. I felt pretty lucky, especially after he started playing. It was very cool to watch and he was worlds beyond the other tambla players I have seen. I will definitely check out that record, sounds great. Yeah, it seemed like the right choice to my wife and we were both so happy to have made it almost from the first moments.
  3. Something for me to look forward to! Seeing them on April 11 or so. I went to see the Charles Lloyd Quartet last night in a celebration of his 70th birthday. With him were Jason Moran on piano, Eric Harland on drums, and Reuben Rogers on bass. Without notice, tabla (hand drum) master Zakir Hussein joined the quartet for most of the set. In sum, Charles fucking Lloyd is the muthafucking Man! He played well even though his sax was fucked up from being dropped that day, and his tone by the end of a rich 2-hour set was really sweet. He also played flute, clarinet, 4-handed piano with Moran, and maracas, and danced around the stage and hovered over the youngsters like a proud father. But he clearly let them run and did not hold them back. If anything, you could see their admiration and inspiration from the man, without that stand-offish idolizing that sometimes happens with young players supporting great old timers. Here, instead of that, the quartet was amaZing, individually and together, and Zakir really added some great shit on talbas and percussion. Lloyd, Harlan and Hussein also play together separately and that really showed in some interplay between them was great including call and response drumming, vocal tone "singing" and scatting. Hard to describe in writing but great in action. I guess I am violating Charles Lloyd's last comments by describing the show. He said that what went on tonight is personal and private and should be kept to ourselves. "Don't let THEM know, that YOU know, what WE know!" Oh well, I had to share it anyway. Go see this cat wherever and whenever you can. Some amazing shit that I am so glad I did not miss to see Ray Davies (as per earlier thread).
  4. Queen Vicki got her prize! That was really cool of you, Steve!
  5. Nice going Ken! How do they sound out of the Extreme?
  6. Nice picks everyone. Great call on the LA4 Ken. Add this one, which is really great on this Concord LP: Ornette is the man, so Vicki also has a great call. I am going to find Money Jungle right now and check that out. Although your pick is also my favorite, the debut should be on the essential list too: Agree on all counts with hungrych, except that there is no question Head Hunters and A Tribute to Jack Johnson are jazz. I think that some of Herbie's early offerings as a leader are essential too: Man, this thread is going to get really, long really fast.
  7. Enrico Rava and Stephano Bollani -- The Third Man [AMAZING!] Charles Lloyd Quartet -- Rabo de Nube The Brad Mehldau Trio -- Live at the Village Vanguard Shelby Lynne -- Just a Little Lovin' B-52s -- Funplex 180g LP with free CD The Raconteurs -- Consolers of the Lonely 180g LP x 2 Big Dipper -- Supercluster Chico O'Farrill -- Nine Flags Used mono LP
  8. This one is truly essential in my book. Amazing arrangements, awesome musicians, and great sound. Just look at the lineup. Nobody knows Oliver Nelson any more, but he was a great arranger and composer, as well as decent tenor sax player, and this was a jazz super-group perfectly suited to the music. Perfection.
  9. We decided to stick with the jazz. Thanks for your input, except for Grawk because the image of Tyll lifting it up has me spooked.
  10. Funny you should say that, because I almost got thrown out of a concert for shouting out some shit when I was in college. The new wavy band Scandal, fronted by the cute new wavy chick Patty Smyth, was opening for somebody (it might even have been the Kinks but I cannot figure that part out) and I started shouting for Patty to lift up her short new wavy skirt. LIFT IT UP! LIFT IT UP! LIFT IT UP! I was a bit drunk and they were terrible so it seemed like the right thing to do at the time. Not sure how that would translate to the Charles Lloyd show.
  11. Prolly right. Makes me want more weird smoked cheddar kettle corn even though I put it away so as not to puke from eating the whole bag. Fuck it, I need a little more.
  12. Two and a half votes for jazz, one for Ray Davies, and one for the Kinks, which is not actually one of the options. Interesting, but I am still torn. What would Jesus do?
  13. I saw Ornette a couple years ago and he was awesome. SF Jazz is doing a Wayne Shorter tribute thing this season, so the Collective is doing his music and he is doing two different shows. I am going to one of them, which has a latin jazz twist, I think. I have also see Harland and Rogers before, and I agree they are hot.
  14. True, although there is a chance. I met Roger Daltry, Zack Starkey, and Pino Paladino after The Who show last year, and Roger actually spent a few minutes chatting with my buddy and me. He was very cool. Pete had bugged out the second the show was over so I didn't even see him backstage. Oh yeah, and I drank the last remaining beer in the guests lounge.
  15. I'm not even really big on back-stage, although my college roommate would kill me if I passed up the chance to meet Ray.
  16. Thanks Steve. That's a high compliment from the resident wood-meister!
  17. So, I have tickets to see jazz legend and really old guy Charles Lloyd tomorrow night. He is playing with Jason Moran, Eric Harland and Reuben Rogers, a killer quartet. He is not and all-time favorite of mine, but he is great and, as mentioned, really old. I have seen several jazz greats shortly before their deaths and I try to see the old guys when they are around for this reason in addition to their music. The dilemma arose today because a buddy just sold his guitar to a guy who works on the Ray Davies tour. He offered him tickets and possibly back-stage passes for the Ray Davies show tomorrow night. Because my buddy cannot go, the guy said I could take the tickets. Ray Davies and the Kinks ARE among my all-time favorites. I've been liking Ray's recent solo work and the Kinks shows I saw were excellent. Ray isn't quite as likely to kick it before I have another chance to see him, but he is around less frequently. My wife might pick either, and I haven't asked her yet. What do you folks think? I am stuck.
  18. Hey Reks, did you ever un-collapse? I hope it isn't worse today, and heck, root canals are easy these days. I've had way too many after a youth of rebellious dentist-hating self-destruction. Let us all know how youare doing when you are up to it.
  19. Three 3-level racks from Core Designs that are similar to these. The owner, Arnold, is a very cool guy and a headphone freak as well. And a larger one of these for use as a turntable platform. Sadly, it does not come with the Orpheus.
  20. Mmmm, Vicodin. Fuckin' A, Reks, that sucks ass. Hit and run victim. Leaky roof victim. Burrito store ripoff victim. Etc. Etc. Etc. Maybe you have to get back together with the Succubus Girlfriend because it seems that the timing of that breakup is a little suspect... Oh, and don't fuck around with drinking and Vicodin, either. We don't want you pulling a Heath by accident.
  21. Speaking of which, aren't you working on something like that already? I found a thread on HF about a project for a linear tracker or something. Is that still happening and do you have any pics/update?
  22. I also like it quite a bit and I'm glad it doesn't sound just like Dummy. That would be dumb.
  23. I have the O2s with the 007t and rock is not their best medium. I will listen some more and post up some thoughts because this evening I was planning to listen to that rig with the Onix CD-1 feeding it balanced. I'll put some rock on the menu tonight.
  24. Here are The Tubes fagging out, not that there's anything wrong with that. Actually, somewhere at my house I have a autographed copy of their promo photo, and Re Styles "signed" it with a big lipstick kiss.
