Best way to do dual OS on MAC

Featured Replies

So I've got enough free space on my MacBook that I'd like to have a go at running Windows on it, just for kicks. So is there any reason not to use boot camp? i.e. is there a better way? With the single largest caveat being that I don't want to have to wipe the drive and reinstall both OS's.

Boot camp works fine as long as you don't mind having to boot into either OS exclusively. If you primarily work in OS X and just want to run the occasional Windows app, then go for Parallels or Fusion. Both work very well. Fusion offers a 30-day free trial, which is nice.

Fusion offers the possibility to use your Boot Camp partition, so you can run the VM if have to do something fastly or you can boot in Windows if you need optimal performance.

I'm confused, what do you mean by booting into either OS exclusively? I thought that once the partition was installed that in order to select the alternate OS all I had to do was boot and hold the option key? At least that's the way the Boot Camp install instructions read. And this would be one of those things were I'd use OS X 99% of the time, Windows 1%.

Parallels is like an emulator, so you'd be running OSX and then running Windows inside of it. With Bootcamp you choose the OS on startup, and that's the OS until you shut down. If you'd be doing any work with ACAD I'd guess Bootcamp would be better.

Yeah, I just meant you have to reboot into the other OS, which is a pain if you do it a lot. But if you use Windows that infrequently then Boot Camp will be fine.

Yeah, the MAC will remain a mac and only be a windows ho everyonce in a while. It will be interesting to see how the Macbook does with Vista Ultimate. I've had a couple of copies for a while now and saw them this weekend which got me thinking that I might as well use one of them. Yay Mojave. :|

:palm:

Fuck you. It's moist and chewy, like cake, and amoebas can blog with it.

Sun's got a free virtual pc type program too that is supposed to be pretty good. Parallels will let you run a bootcamp partition in a window when you don't want to boot completely over.

But this will let us run a dedicated COD server next weekend so it's win in this case.

I play COD on my PS3.. one of the players is the host. Well I PLAYED on my PS3. Nowadays I don't even know if my PS3 remembers me or how awesome I am. I don't even know if it works anymore?

Windows is ALWAYS lose, though.

No way in hell im selling my PS3. One day it will make a great plaything again. That day is likely about 6 years from now, but it will be awesome. PS3 is like wine and the rotting corpses in Rek's basement: only get better with time.

So it's the ban then?

I just gave my Xbox 360 to my cousins. I've not touched it in months and they're in middle school/high school, so it will give them a reason to live. :)
