Well we have all read reviews about the new Beyer?s, namely the DT880?s and the DT990?s so I won?t boar you with more dribble other than to say that I am a Beyer fan and like the new ones even more than the old ones. My review of the DT 990?s would be very positive. What I do want to comment on is my ?re-cableing of the DT 990?s. I used two 10 foot lengths of Mogami pure copper cable (shield and vinal removed) to put two 22ga. leads to each terminal for a total of eight wires used. I did it in a ?Y? configuration and drilled a hole in the other cup as opposed to running a length through the headband. No other mods were done. The end result: The sounds explode four…

I'm looking for a pair of closed headphone for myself and a friend, and we'll be using them for classical music, with decent amplification. Not looking for IEM's (I have Ety's). I've heard various AT closed cans and they just don't work for my ears with this music, so I'm not considering them. I've also heard the Ultrasone ProLine 750, which also didn't work, but I haven't heard the other ultrasones. That leaves things like the Senn. 280, Beyer 250, Beyer 770 (I suspect I will find it strident), AKG K271 (the graph seems to have basically no bass), AKG K81DJ, and the Ultrasones I haven't heard (HeadRoom rate the Hi-Fi 700 and ProLine 650's highly, and in general I'v…

Thanks to Alex (ayt999) I've had a pair of R10's on loan for a good amount of time now and figured it was time to post some impressions. The R10's have wonderful detail retrieval and are one of the most resolving phones around. This is of course a double edged sword as it can be great on well recorded music but absolutely brutal on poor recordings. The R10's tonality which I do feel to be quite natural sounding is likely their best attribute. Probably the most talked about attribute of the R10's is their sound stage, yes it's huge and yes it gives the listener that sense of being completely enveloped in sound. That being said, I do not think it is very natural, in fact on…

Anyone have suggestions on who to use for a balanced recable of the 701's? Thought about Headroom but they're limited to the Cardas cable. Already have Larry and Drew in mind. Other suggestions?

Well, After upgrading my Denon 3910 with the SACDmod + adding few extra blackgates around the dac for good measure, and recabling my K701s with mogami quad, now my system is quite a bit brighter, mostly due to the recable. 909 thought something was off with the recabled K701s which are now fatiguing. Iron_Dreamer and I also thought the high freqs sounded fatiguing when listening to Tylls recabled (cardas) K701s at the So Cal meet. I dismissed it as bad cable (cardas), but now that my K701s have the same problem with the mogami, I think AKG used the cheap-ass wire they did, to tame the highs and cover up the deficiency in that area. Now my tinnitus is flairing…

http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start?ProductSKU=MDRD777LP&DCMP=Redirect_ss_MDRRD777LP Looks scarily similar to triports in some ways... But it is a new contender in the closed headphone market, and seems to have something PTH like built in. Ultrasone also have announced their Edition 9, which seems to be a repackaged Edition 7.

It sounds so good out of a good amp and source (ppx3-slam nos tubes), but at the same time so good even out of a simple circuit portable. So sweeet with Clapton Unplugged, no harsh treble at all. Does anyone know what Powermax (if thats the name of the company) was selling them before the drama bomd ensued? edit: $530

Hi everyone, I don't know if there is anyone around here who likes SA5k over the HD650, but if there is, I was wondering if I could get some tips. So basically, I currently own the HD650 and the SA5k. My mom uses the HD650 back at home, and my parents want me to give my SA5k to my cousin as a gift (strange, I know. Don't ask. ). So that leaves me with no headphone at college pretty soon. I've never heard the K701, but I've begun considering it. I personally don't like the HD650's dark signature and the "veil" (ya, I notice it) doesn't work too well with my most of my music. (It works great with classical, but not so great with industrial, rock such as Tool, pop and el…

Yup, I feel like getting a second setup to complement my K1000 setup, and I'm trying to decide between an Omega II setup or a balanced HD650 setup. My Omega II will be amped by a KGSS, and the HD650s will be amped by a GS-X, when the new MOSFET modules are released. Basically, the intended goal of this secondary setup is to complement the K1000 setup, so I don't really want it to have a similar sound signature. So, what do you guys think?

Well I finally have a little spare cash, so I have at long last ordered a set of K-701?s. I had one of the first sets on loan from AKG last fall (To take to the NY meet), and I fell in love with them. I think that they are the bestest headphones made. Soon I?ll think about re-cabling them. I wonder what wire I should use? Now all I have to do is wait until they get here.

Well, with my newfound love of Stax headphones I thought I'd start a Stax thread. So talk about your Stax cans/energizers/amps...etc. I've got a pair of SR-Lambda Pro headphones recently and I love them. Right nw I've got them hooked up as follows: Wadia 23 RCA>Denon AVR-100>SRD-7 Pro>SR-Lambda Pro I've also heard these out of Hirsch's ES-1 and the 007t amp. The ES-1 trumps all of them of course. Overall they're the clearest sounding headphones I've heard. Vocals are warm but well articulated, the highs are sparkling and fast. The bass is full and rich but does lack the speed of a dynamic headphone at times...but it can go quite deep on some recording…

Has anyone tried the new DT990s yet? If so how do they differ from the old dt990 pros, also how do they compare with the likes of the 650's?

The Stax Omega 2's are headphones I've been interested in for a long time, and lately I've been getting the urge to buy a pair. Thanks to pricejapan a new pair would only cost about $1500 which is far cheaper they are from US Stax dealers. A few things are holding me back from pulling the trigger: 1) I'm perfectly happy with my current L3000 based rig, at most an O2 rig would be complimentary 2) The reported lack of bass impact compared to dynamic phones has always been a concern. I'd like to hear peoples opinions on the O2's and any comparisons to your favorite dynamic phones would be very helpful.

I'm finding more and more that the profile of the Etys is interfering with my enjoyment of them. Allow me to explain a bit. I primarily use these headphones for listening while I'm doing yardwork (mowing), riding the motorcycle (at low levels so I can still hear the world) and while reading. The fact that the Etys protrude quite a bit outside my actual ear when properly inserted is causing some discomfort and annoyance. So what I'm wondering is what would be the cheapest route to custom-insert IEMs? The least-expensive commercial product that I've found is the UE-5c's and at $550 they are well beyond what I'm willing to spend. Anyone have any other suggestions?

I have been thinking about trying some new headphones out. I tend to like the senns, particularly the hd600. I have Reks modded grado sr-80's and I am very happy with that sound, especially the non-sibilant treble. I also very much like the senn 595/ 120 ohm for its grado like speed and dynamics. The one I am wondering about is the MS2i but I have never liked the sr-325 this headphone is based on. But in a short listen I definitely liked the MS2. I really like the grado sound from the mids down. But the treble can often be to harsh and sometimes sibilant as well. I am open to suggestions for headphones, in general .... and also, modding suggestions for the current grado l…

Lately I've been thinking if a home rig is really even worth it. I haven't used my home rig intensively for about 5 months. I really only use it when I am programming on my computer for school. I listen to music non-stop, but I've been using my portable setup the most. I guess I'm just at the point where I wonder if its worth all this. I have: Cardas cabled (balanced) k340, balanced 325i, my custom tube amp, Zhaolu, monster hts2500mkII. I figure I could sell it all and upgrade the weak link in my portable setup (e2c) to (e500). My portable consists of Zen Vision:m, pint, e2 and k81dj. I know this decision is really best answered myself, but I'm hoping for some w…

Well my new woody SR-200's arrived today (thanks again Juan). So far I'm pleasantly surprised, they have a pretty warm sonic signature and have much more bass than I was expecting. Here's a few pics (note these do not have hp1000 drivers):
