I thought this was a nice piece by NPR. http://www.npr.org/blogs/allsongs/2014/02/21/280715487/the-good-listener-for-bands-and-fans-the-no-fault-divorce?utm_content=socialflow&utm_campaign=nprfacebook&utm_source=npr&utm_medium=facebook The Neil Young example is actually a good one, but he still produces some good work every now and then, it's just not anything that even resembles his top form work. Johnny Cash and Dylan are exceptions in the sense that they both did (and Dylan still does) some of their best work in the later stages of their careers. But as far as adding purchased music to my collection, I'm just happy that there are so many ways…

You just got a new piece of gear (or entire system) and need to select one of your reference songs to see how you new gear fares; get your first impression. What do you play, and furthermore, why? Alternately, you attend a meet and sit at someone elses table. Same question.

I know Beethoven is deaf, Mozart is childish and partied till he died or something. I failed History 3 anyways.. the RCM exam for music history. All joking aside, what is the difference between those two in every aspect including their lifestyle and music style? Both of these composers are very famous and I know I can go google, but I'm just wondering what you guys have to say.

I'm startin down the rippin road. I need to unload a batch of older CDs and am ripping them with EAC. My assumptions for using flac.exe to do this are: * There is no upsampling feature I can use with EAC (from 16/44 to 24/96) * The flac file format should be fairly future-safe. * I can play flac files on many DACs that I may be able to buy today. I am also assuming that when I read about others here with a 24/96 flac file that the file was first a 24/96 WAV which was then compressed to 24/96 flac. Is that correct? (Or is there a way to do this in a batch process maybe with Adobe Audition? Probably. ) My real question is: are my assumptions correct…

I am not sure any of you have heard of the small Russian band of two called Kauan before. The main force behind it is Anton Belov, who plays guitar, keyboards, and does vocals. The other member, Lubov Mushnikova, plays violin. Though the band comes from Russia, most of the lyrics are Finnish. To date, four albums have been released: Lumikuuro (2007), Tietäjän Laulu (2008), Aava tuulen maa (2009), and Kuu... (2011). The first two albums are considered a mix of folk, doom, and black metal. Having said this, the main sound consists of beautiful melodies driven by piano and guitar with a mix of both clean and back metal vocals. I am not really a fan of black metal,…

The single Earth Intruders is on the net and radio. Produced by Timbaland, very different from her other songs but IMO very good and continues to show how diverse a producer Timbaland can be.

Seeing BlessingX's post over on the ",..listening to" of "My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts" reminded me that I meant to post a link to the Byrne/Eno site where you can download the multitrack session for a couple of the cuts from that album (which I just plain wore out when it was first released). So, if you have a DAW/Editing software with multitrack capabilities, check it out. It's too much fun to play around with the tracks and create your own mix of "Help Me Someone" or "My Secret Life". Once you've downloaded all 24 tracks of "Help Me,.." , try de-constructing it by soloing (to hear the single track alone) then muting that track. Another fun thing, I kinda like to s…

I'm a huge fan. Own every one old and new, vinyl and CD. But the more I listen to "Back on Top" can't stop thinking to me its the the best record hes made. That's among 5-6 killers. If your out and about and see the CD used, grab it! The slow ballads are freaking killer. Listening now, track 5, when the leaves come falling down. GREAT MUSIC!!

I guess I shoulda said "For,..". The 2012 Monterey Jazz Festival was a treat for Potter lovers. He played with several groups over the weekend and I was able to records a couple of the bands. I've put up 7 new 24/48 files on my SoundCloud account from the festival and 6 have Potter doing his thing. The first group is the Metheny Unit Band and the second cut has Pat using the Orchestron (killer automated multi instrument partially controlled by air pressure which you can hear swooshing in the background). The second group is the Monterey Festival on Tour which features Christian McBride-bass, Benny Green-piano, Potter, Ambrose Akinmusire-trumpet, and Lewis Nash o…

I appear on this! This is unmastered -- it's halfway funded right now, it'll get mastered when it reaches funding. But even if it doesn't get funded, you still get all the unmastered tracks and IMHO, not all the tracks need mastering. (Mine just needs the first couple seconds of silence clipped off.) Namlook Tribue Bonus tracks At least 40 tracks averaging more than 5 minutes each, that's 200 minutes of music for $22, what a bargain! It's mostly ambient and atmospheric electro, and profits go to Namlook's family.
