Music

I am a big fan of the ECM and MA Records labels. I have found most of the recordings from these labels have great music detail and mixing, especially anything Todd mixes over at MA Records is exceptional in sonic quality. My dilemma is that both labels are very deep in talent and have many CDs available and I am reluctant to just randomly pick CDs without knowing what I am getting. Both labels have an eclectic roster of talent but some of it is just a little bit out there for me at this point and I would rather not buy a CD just to have to wait a while for it to grow on me. Any recommendations? What artists have you purchased and liked?

Me and a couple of friends spent today attempting to record some trip-hop. It didn't really end up sounding anything like trip-hop, and we're probably going to rerecord most of the parts because they're a little sloppy, but I think it actually turned out pretty well. As I was casually listening to some music tonight, my choice of CD brought a rush of memory back to me that inspired me to ask this question. What is the most memorable, striking moment you've had while at a concert, seeing a live performance? For me it was at an outdoor theater that no longer exists - Poplar Creek in the NW Chicago burbs. Since my trainer has decided to stick me on a stairmaster and/or elliptical thingy for one hour six days a week, I need tunes to get me through the tedium and misery. I absolutely HATE the let's-get-moving music gyms play (fortunately, I'm in her home and have no competing ugly music blasting). I hate club/dance music for the most part and music with programed drums. I just want to forget I'm on this damn thing and make the time disappear. You know how it goes -- the album would be perfect if it weren't for this one track, or these two tracks, or whatnot. The Tape Project, wherein they make dubs off the original master tapes with custom built gear and you get albums on 15ips 1/4" half track stereo tape. Reel to reel tape, as close to the master tape as you'll ever get without owning the actual master tape. The catalog is pretty limited, unfortunately.

Killing Joke - They get better and better with time, like a fine wine or cheese. The White Stripes - Hyped as all hell yes, but simple composition is an art, imho. I disliked them at first too. Primus - what's not to love?
