Music

From Kumbaya to Hammer Smashed Face.

  1. Started by Augsburger,

I am a big fan of the ECM and MA Records labels. I have found most of the recordings from these labels have great music detail and mixing, especially anything Todd mixes over at MA Records is exceptional in sonic quality. My dilemma is that both labels are very deep in talent and have many CDs available and I am reluctant to just randomly pick CDs without knowing what I am getting. Both labels have an eclectic roster of talent but some of it is just a little bit out there for me at this point and I would rather not buy a CD just to have to wait a while for it to grow on me. Any recommendations? What artists have you purchased and liked?

Me and a couple of friends spent today attempting to record some trip-hop. It didn't really end up sounding anything like trip-hop, and we're probably going to rerecord most of the parts because they're a little sloppy, but I think it actually turned out pretty well. I'm curious as to what you guys think. http://www.mediafire.com/?dudsxc1151v I just did the intro part, but I'll probably do some bass on it eventually.

\ Needless to say, this kind of news sucks. I had heard she'd had a rough go of it lately, and this explains a lot. Hopefully she will get healthy soon.

  5. http://niggytardust.com/ I haven't seen a thread about this album (here) - I managed to get a free copy before they took them down (after 100,000 downloads) and actually went back to pay $5 for the flac (eat that, radiohead). Disclosure: I was a big nine inch nails fan in the 90's. I'd heard William's "list of demands" prior to NiggyTardust!, and liked it too, though I am not generally a hip hop fan (beastie boys aside). I really like this album. It is probably one of the most interesting albums I've heard since American Edit. It is just, wow. Tremendous respect for Trent's productions skills. Some of the tracks sound very nin-like, others not at all, and it st…

  7. As I was casually listening to some music tonight, my choice of CD brought a rush of memory back to me that inspired me to ask this question. What is the most memorable, striking moment you've had while at a concert, seeing a live performance? For me it was at an outdoor theater that no longer exists - Poplar Creek in the NW Chicago burbs. We had gone to see King Crimson there on the tour they did supporting the Beat album. But there were mega intense thunderstorms that day and the show was rained out. I had been a Crimso fan since the early '70's but had never seen them. I was heartbroken. Flash ahead a couple of years. Three of a Perfect Pair is out. Crimso is tou…

Is there an easy-to-use, reputable service/store to sell CDs to over the internets? I am looking for something that makes the process very simple, which is why I am not currently contemplating the forums. I welcome your suggestions.

Since we here have the coolest feature i seen on any forums being the ability to embed video in the threads directly I figure we need a Music Video thread. this thread is for any video that was done in the 80's. the 80's were the high light of music videos and 80's music is pretty wild and stretched... The first Video is From Morris Day and his "Jungle Love" video he may be best known for. Little do people know Day went to high school with Prince...who cares the song Rocks! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irimNjHPS9c

  11. So I've been listening to more music at work (now that I have a job that lets me do that) and I've been coming across some of my favorite songs/lyrics. Rules: 1) Don't post full song lyrics, just the few lines that you find inspiring/neat-o/fuckass awesome/profound...etc. 2) Please include the artist, song title, and album. 3) Format counts you lazy SOB's; Lyrics and song title in "quotes", Album title in italics. ie. Artist: Grace Potter and the Nocturnals Album: This is Somewhere Song: "Ah Mary" Lyric: "She's the beat of my heart, She's the shot of gun"

I decided to expand on my mid-year report card for my end-of-year ranking. Any one of the albums receiving an A could be considered my Album of the Year, but if forced to choose one it would have to be Rasputina's Oh Perilous World. The rest of my ramblings are as follows... A | Catherine Anne Davies - The Piano EP Another haunting collection of songs from Ms. Davies. Nothing groundbreaking here, but the simple and straight-forward songs and her voice create a haunting atmosphere that's difficult to describe but not easily forgotten. Samples available here. A | Epica - The Divine Conspiracy Since picking this up, I've explored their back catalog and came away unim…

Much of their back catalog suffers from the typical 80's CD mastering issues - bright, brittle, and anemic. I believe there are CD remasters on the way as well, but if anyone happens to a: be a KJ fan, b: have a vinyl rig they are proud of, and c: is in to making digitizations of their vinyl - I'd love to hear a couple tracks for comparison purposes. Well, I'd love to hear them all but that is a lot to ask...

Since my trainer has decided to stick me on a stairmaster and/or elliptical thingy for one hour six days a week, I need tunes to get me through the tedium and misery. I absolutely HATE the let's-get-moving music gyms play (fortunately, I'm in her home and have no competing ugly music blasting). I hate club/dance music for the most part and music with programed drums. I just want to forget I'm on this damn thing and make the time disappear. I've had my ipod on shuffle, and have found that some songs, usually long ones, and ones I've known for years but still love seem to work best. I start listening, get happy, and time blows by. I want to create some playlists so I don't …

  18. You know how it goes -- the album would be perfect if it weren't for this one track, or these two tracks, or whatnot. (This is actually just an excuse to get rid of some of my favourite albums from my insanely long list.) Deep Purple, Who Do We Think We Are? -- fine up until "Place In Line", which totally drags things down, and doesn't get much better with "Our Lady". King Crimson, Red -- would've been fine if they had just put something more "Fractured"-like instead of the unorthodox improvisation of "Providence". Talking Heads, Remain in Light -- this one pains me, because I really don't understand my dislike of "Once in a Lifetime", but I just don't -- I can liste…

The Tape Project, wherein they make dubs off the original master tapes with custom built gear and you get albums on 15ips 1/4" half track stereo tape. Reel to reel tape, as close to the master tape as you'll ever get without owning the actual master tape. The catalog is pretty limited, unfortunately.

  22. Killing Joke - They get better and better with time, like a fine wine or cheese. The White Stripes - Hyped as all hell yes, but simple composition is an art, imho. I disliked them at first too. Primus - what's not to love?

  23. I'm not talking about bands or singers no one here would listen to, but about the bands people whose opinion you respect seem to like a lot, but you just don't get. I'm sure I've got more than this, but here's a start. Opeth: very silly stuff Dream Theater: C'mon people, this is as corny as it gets Flaming Lips: interesting for a minute, then yawn Portishead: okay, not bad but still unlistenable Bright Eyes: a couple great songs, but pretentious drips Ryan Adams: okay, a good song or five, fav is an Oasis cover, but blech

Each CD comes in a mini-LP sleeve, and the CDs themselves are recreated to look like little vinyls. I have no familiarity with Gould's work, but I have a hard time passing up a deal like this. Any thoughts?
