  1. That was Doug's point, it is just as subjective as an evaluation using approved audiophile descriptions. The fact that "metrics" were used does not change that since the metrics are crap. In fact it is really worse because it gives the impression of objectivity and scientific rigor when in fact there is really none. Whether it was done out of ignorance or intentionally is the real question.

  2. Got into the car and drove. A lot. I trust Matt would have approved of the double double animal style I had in his memory at Kettleman City.

  4. The only problem with Bose is that they're overpriced. Since you didn't pay for it, by all means, get it working.

  5. Todd, very cool of your family to volunteer, it sets a great example for them which they are more likely to accept rather than a lecture. I am always concerned about the So Cal. mindset of "it is all about me" and the influence on our children. As parents we always try to lead by example. Now having said that, Lance my youngest is starting trumpet lessons. So being the good father that I am I have been introducing him to "real musicians" like Miles Davis and this- http://youtu.be/X_x2frivy6w except I forgot that when asked what is the name of that cool song, it is "Love For Sale" . Daddy can be an idiot sometime.

  7. And maybe the style of distortion present in most transducers offsets the flaws in most methods of reproduction. If the source material isn't perfect (and none of it is) then having perfect reproduction of that isn't ideal. If the flaws of one help the other, and vice versa, then that can only be a good thing, unless you're trying to analyze those flaws.

  8. I think personal taste/preferences plays into this more than anything. The HD-800 have very low distortion across the entire range compared to most "dynamic" phones. I think that lack of distortion is such a different sound for some folks that it just turns them off immediately.

  10. The Torpedo and Crack will teach you wildly different soldering skills. If you see yourself building one-off tube amps using point to point techniques, the Bottlehead is a good starting point. If you want to do primarily PCB based projects, the Torpedo is better. It is probably a good idea to get one project under your belt before jumping into future ones. Different people learn differently -if you are a book learner, Art of Electronics is excellent. If you are a hands on learner, start soldering working on other people's projects, and trying to trace what's going on. It is how a lot of us got into this stuff.

  12. Sent an email to see if it is possible to cancel my Geek Out order. I'd much rather use that money to support my hookers and blow habit.
