Just some quick impressions of Japanese juice from a project dinner last night - Hibiki 12 - definitely a more interesting pour than I recall from Yamazaki 12. Initially it was a little weak and had a strong grain note, but it really opened up into focused, sweet vanilla. Soft fruits and clean oak underneath. Very little in the way of smoke. Much more of a Lowland or zero-peat Campbeltown, and coincidentally reminded me of Black Bull. Hakushu Heavily Peated - totally brash. This is the Japanese Laphroig, no doubt about it. No rounded, balancing sweetness like you'd get in an Ardbeg. Straight iodine and campfire. It's good, but no way this is worth the premium price.
  3. Had dress rehearsal for a Bob Dylan tribute concert I'm playing in over the next three nights. It's sounding great, though I had a squabble with the other drummer (we take turns playing). He's an old guy, and I guess that for decades he's been counting the intro to "All Along the Watchtower" wrong, placing the downbeat 1/8th note behind where it's supposed to be. Trying to explain to him that it's not the guitarists' fault that it's a sloppy mess wasn't fun. Maybe I wasn't super diplomatic after having a couple of beers, but seriously, there are few things more obstinate than proud musicians. It's tough to walk the line between "you're really good and I respect your playing" and "but you're playing that one thing wrong and it's screwing everyone else up".

  5. Build is complete. Took a couple of hours to get everything working (iMessages, app store, login issues in general) which required a bit of googling but I have everything set up now. Going to run some stability tests as it has frozen on some file transfers a couple of times now. There's solutions for everything but things aren't going to work right out of the box. So far rather enjoying it. It's great to see the sliders in Lightroom get applied in real time instead of having to wait for a few seconds at times.
