Are you familiar with Todd Rundgren? That description sounds exactly what Todd is all about. One of his major influences was the Beach Boys, for the vocal harmonies and layering, as well as the overall Brian Wilson composition aesthetic.

That is where the rump is. In capturing the true power and dynamics and weight of a "live" performance, headphones, IMO, simply can't touch speakers. You have to be able to actually move air to get that visceral response. Headphones really don't have it in comparison. I do love the bass on really nice headphone set-ups, it is very tight, detailed, and does go quite low, a very linear sound, but it doesn't have the ooomph behind it. Overall, just because there is not a lot of musical material down there, doesn't mean that it is not important for a system to be able to capture those tones. Speaker rig 40 hz should be just fine, but if you can get in the mid 20's, your good. I've heard headphone rigs that went down to a clean mid 20's just fine, but again it lacks the power and drive when you hear it on a speaker rig.

* Very short and quick music theory lesson * When you hear a sound, or a musical note, that sound is not simply composed of one particular sound. It is composed of many different sounds. We call those overtones. For example, if a sound is produced at 50 hz, not only are you hearing the 50 hz sound, but also the next overtones at 100 hz, and another at 150, then 200, etc. For all practical purposes you usually go up to the 8th or 8th harmonic series of overtones, but really intricate instruments like a cymbal crash their overtone series can go really high. Take that same 50 hz sound, the actual pitch at 50 hz is what is referred to as the fundamental. That needs to be solid in order to have a good sense of pitch, power, dynamics, etc. However, there are some traces of sound at its halfway point, 25 hz, and every half way point underneath that, which all adds up to what we perceive as the fundamental point of the harmonic series. For reference, 50 hz is low low E, the lowest string on the bass guitar.

Pretty much musical fundamentals, the lower lower overtones that sort of give music its weight, body, and power...minor details

I pretty much think all he does is cruise ebay, search search search, find local listings, etc. I mean if you devote 90% of your time simply to finding rare headphones, I am sure you will be pretty successful.

It would have to be very limited use. I would say playoffs only, restricted to homerun balls, to determine if it stayed within the foul line, or if it actually goes over the line on the fence that marks it officially as a "homerun." They cannot use it for anything else, because it will make the games too long, and the aspect of human error and judgement is what baseball is all about. Imagine if coaches had the right to challenge balls vs. strikes or close outs with runners on base - the games would be like 6-7 hours long.

Comfort is a subjective thing, almost as subjective as sound quality. I personally find Grados very comfortable, even more comfortable than senns. However I do have a large head, so the clamping force is more of an issue, whereas the pads are just fine resting against my ears with the Grados

I believe Alex from APL used to work for Sony as an engineer. I am not sure what sector, and I cannot find the source currently that I read, but basically he is not an idiot, and does have some legitimate engineering experience. The forums are pretty much like Steve Hoffman's forums in that all the users swear they are god, so your unlikely to get an unbiased opinion there. The reoccuring thing I keep on reading about the APL stuff is that it is so detailed, it can actually border on sounding grainy and somewhat analytical.

Cool man, I hear ya - that's some crazy stuff though, 2 handed omaha. The odds of you getting those hands are even lower than normal considering all those cards are out with everyone having 2 hands. Omaha is a pretty crazy game though, its almost like playing bingo, since you have so many different possibilities you almost tempted to play through the flop.

Sorry, just can't help but comment on good ole Lou (ltucci1924). I hope he is okay, considering that 1924 is the year of his birth, from what I understood about him. Obviously in his old age he was getting a bit senile, but gotta love the crazy old man that stirs up crap. Even though I have never heard the denon d5000's, the way he describes the R10's, compared with how I hear them, makes me believe that I would not get the d5000's stock or modded whatsoever. I concur - sorry 909 but your way off base. The predator is nowhere near the sophistication of Justin's pico. To modify nate's analogy, I believe comparing the predator to the pico would be like comparing the bithead to the max dac. The predator appears to be similar to the hornet but with less available voltage swing. Justin believes the pico amp section to be on par if not better than the AE-2.

I read about that in the newspaper. Apparently the Chicago Lyric is being applauded as most opera houses are trying to stay away from the diva mindset that has dominated opera in previous years. Today's audience expects more from their opera stars than just standing there and singing. They need to act and be able to move and dance. That requires hard work, and diva like behavior from someone like Gheorghiu will no longer be tolerated by opera houses. The Chicao Lyric essentially was making a statement, saying they could care less who you are, you need to make all rehearsals and work your butt off if you want to perform there. In the long-term, this will be for the best.
