  1. In the past year I've given up trying to pimp out my iPod with fancy dacs/amps...it's just too much of a hassle in terms of portability, battery life, managing songs, and just plain looking stupid. I've switched over to just plugging my ESW10s into my iPhone and listening to Mog. Unlimited music @ 320kbps keeps me happy and I actually listen to a lot more artists/albums then I would otherwise.
  2. Yeah, I had the same experience with the LCD-2 listening to them at the ALO stand at Canjam too. Sounded much better on the WA6 SE. Funny thing is that on HF everybody was saying how the LCD2+Alo amp were such a magical combo, which was total BS to me.
  3. That's exactly how I felt with my vastly overpriced WA5 that I had a really hard time selling off!
  4. Hey look, our products are so great we encase our 'special sauce' in a red enclosure so you can't really see what's in our amp. The mystery is what makes it sound so divine! I reckon if you open it up you'll find something like this inside:
  5. Yup, NASes are cool since you don't have to deal with leaving a computer on but I there is so much more flexibility to having an actual PC running instead with all sorts of services on it. I have an old laptop that I just use as a server and it happens to be quieter than most NAS units out there. The lid stays closed and it's connected to a 3TB USB drive which has all my flac files as well as movies / tv shows. This lets me run eLyric, J.River, Plex Server, and PS3 Media Server to serve all my media related needs
  6. J.River (the program that runs on windows) can read a DLNA library if I’m correct and also control a DLNA renderer like the PWD. My River (the app for iphone) needs to have J.River media server running on a computer to be used. It actually hooks into the J.River library system (not DLNA) and so has all sorts of benefits like blistering fast cover art, reading local playlists, changing ratings, etc. which can’t be done with a regular DLNA library.
  7. Yup, these filters seem a little like marketing gimmick in my eyes….like a lot of other BS out there in the audiophile world. Speaking of which, I have still yet to be really impressed with any USB 24/192 solutions out there which is why I’m kinda curious as to the different approach that PS Audio is taking compared to most of the competition. For me the biggest benefit of this DAC is the bridge despite people’s love/hate relationship with it. I just love not having to futz with my computer all the time to play music. Just whip out my iPad, browse my library at the comfort of my couch and listen to music J I’ve found J.River to be a great media streamer / manager for the Bridge. You should also download an iphone/ipad app called ‘My River’. It works with J.River only but does so much better of a job presenting your music library than eLyric does.
  8. I don't know if I have bad ears or what but I honestly can't really tell much of a difference in these filters. Maybe a slight difference in how harsh some recordings might sound...but I really have to strain to tell the difference on my speaker setup. I've long since given up and just stick with the auto setting on mine. There is a bigger difference in switching inputs in my opinion.
  9. Yeah, the longevity of these units hasn't been vetted for yet, but considering the old DLIIIs are so prevalent and with little/no problems, I have pretty good faith in my PWD. Mine is about 2 years old now and has never has never missed a beat. As for auditioning the unit, I feel that dacs are kinda hard to judge unless it is in your system and you have it for an extended amount of time. I've only heard it through the Bridge and USB, the later is pretty good but I find that the bass is a little less controlled than through Bridge. Overall though I highly recommend it. PS Audio sometimes rubs me the wrong way, but I think they did a commendable effort on this dac and have obviously spent a ton of money on R&D as well as building the infrastructure for the Bridge. It's pretty hard to find any other dacs out there that match the flexibility, feature set, and damn good sound at this price point (when buying used).
  10. Hey, seems you've been quite happy with the unit this whole time and haven't had too many complains SQ wise. Why bother upgrading then if you don't like the prospect of investing more into the unit. I decided to upgrade mine...if I don't care much about the upgrade I'll just return it. PS Audio is usually very good about their 30 day money back guarantee.
  11. That really sucks. I'm glad I sent mine back for a refund before they removed the active crossover feature. I couldn't be happier with my decision since that system was constantly causing me grief. It's just too much money to spend on something that is so unreliable and flaky.
  12. Earphone Solutions has a good coupon for 25% off from now until the 30th. I think i might get a pair of those new Shure SE215 earphones. Will make for a great, relatively cheap, workout headphone. Use code: 'BLACK' on checkout
  13. I got mine for under $2000 over a year ago and haven't regretted my purchase one bit. The rest of my system has changed multiple times over the past couple years but this DAC has been steady with me. I think it's a really well priced piece of equipment for $2000-2500 and has enough innovation, upgradeability, and expandability to last people a long time.
  14. For any of you interested, the MK.II upgrades are up: http://www.psaudio.com/products/audio/media-players/pwd-mki-to-mkii Seems to be a pretty neat upgrade, especially since all the inputs are now going through the so called Digital Lens. Makes the DAC a whole lot more versatile in my opinion.
  15. If only you could buy them new coz It just sucks hunting for used Mk1s out there. God knows where half of them have been and how many owners they've had...
  16. From the description of the Woo website, it seems like it will be a very upgraded WA5 amp, with separate power supplies etc. I'm guessing the topology will be pretty similar along with the parts used (other than new transformer). I owned a WA5 for over a year and while it was quite good, I can't say it was worth the $4-5k I spent for it at the time for a decent headamp and a mediocre speaker amp. Woo amps rely too much on overly fancy tubes and exotic parts to have them sound decent...which I think is the wrong mentality when designing a circuit. My Atma sphere amps/ preamps sounds glorious (and dead silent) with just stock russian 6SN7 tubes, which shows what a well implemented circuit can accomplish. Weight is also a huge issue with these amps...there is absolutely no reason why the WA5 amps needed to weigh a ton due to the chassis...makes it impossible to move and ship / resell. The new amp is twice as heavy and i'm guessing that $3-4k of what you're paying for is that fancy chassis. Moral of the story, I went down that rabbit hole once with expensive Woo amps and won't make that mistake again...
  17. that was fast. I was expecting LCD-3s in the near future but didn't know they'd come out a month after the last revision! If history serves me right, it's best to wait at least 5-6 months for all the kinks to be worked out.
  18. True. Now that I think of it logitech has a tendency to botch a lot of things....squeezebox anybody? I felt there was so much more innovation and support before they got bought out.
  19. Yeah, I'm pretty bummed about the whole outcome of it even though i received mine around the same time as you JP. The problem for me though was that every time I would look at my unit I would get really upset with the whole turnout of events, what was promised vs. what was delivered, and just the overall unfinished feel the unit had to it. It obviously gives me very little confidence when they kept recalling my unit to get tweaked and they are still changing things up since I received mine in June! With this whole patent issue i'm wondering if UE will be jumping on the bandwagon of doing active crossovers or not. They have a whole lot more resources behind them (being backed by logitech and all), so there is a possibility that they'll take advantage of the situation on release something in the future.
  20. Yeah, their explanation is pretty weird and I have a hard time understanding if they are still active crossovers or not. Since there are 3 amps controlling the different earpieces, it seems that they are still active. Anyhow, I decided to get out of this mess about a week or two ago even though I had received my unit a couple months back. Jerry was nice enough to let me send mine back in for a refund after I voiced my concerns. As for the JH3a and my extended experience with it, I thought it was pretty good and pretty much the best iems that I've heard to date...but the unit is just too clunky and hard to connect to anything other than computer USB, making it not very practical for everyday use like a regular set of IEMs. The sound signature was punchy but I always felt that detail could be a lot more refined and they seemed a little muddy for my tastes. Even for me that was a big proponent of the system ever since Canjam, I just find it really hard for anybody to actually stay on as or right now. Just wait for it to come out and then order it since there is nothing to lose in being cautious.
  21. For those wanting a kindle touch but wished they had physical page scrolling buttons, you should consider the B&N Nook. I switched from an older kindle to the new Nook Touch and couldn't be happier. Unlike the new Kindle that looks like a shrunken down iPad, the Nook actually is contoured and feels like it was designed to be held for hours on end. Interface is great and it has physical page turning buttons on each side if you're into that kind of thing. Biggest plus for me though is ePub support
  22. That's it, everybody is gonna ditch their Stax setups in favor of the HD800s!!
  23. Yummmm! I love how the silver BHSE matches the color of the SR-009!
  24. Another vote for XLD here. I used to be a longtime Max user but eventually shipped since XLD is much better supported. Interface has gotten substantially better of the years and is quite good at mass tagging albums now. That being said, the absolute best tagging program for Windows (if that's your thing) is called Tag'n'Rename!
  25. In all seriousness though its good to hear, especially from Spritzer, who's been quite against the voicing of more recent stax headphones, that these are indeed not overly bright / harsh. Obviously time will tell how they stand up...
