Probably cheaper and easier to put the drive in a USB caddy. Only parts that I've seen which would do what you need would be PCI IDE controller cards. Never heard of a PATA-SATA adapter and if such a thing exists it'd probably be a card mounted solution too. The two interfaces are different in how they work rather than just being different kinds of connector.

The Atom is closer to an Athlon XP in performance. Maybe a 2500+ Barton. It's basically a Pentium Pro on steriods. It isn't close to a Core processor.

My MSI Wind is very very quiet and the Dell will be silent because it hasn't got a fan and runs an SSD. If you want better video support go with the Wind because it's still the only netbook with a proper O/C feature. 720p video and the core codec are smooth and fine with the +24% clockspeed.
