November 17, 2007 East Bay SOTA Meet Impressions
philodox replied to Voltron's topic in Meet Impressions
I'm glad it sounds good, and I agree that with this type of unit you want it to be on its own and not in a stack. I still think that the tubes could be placed better, but it is a minor 'niggle' as Dusty pointed out. I'm not sure I completely follow your last paragraph. Seemed to go a little Patrick82 from this side of the screen. -

Yeah, that would be the way to do it, I think. -

I doubt that. Anyone else notice that you need to reach over the tubes to access the XLR jacks? Also, not to be picky, but is it asking too much to not have unfilled holes on the back of your $30,000 modded CD player? -
I saw that first bit, but read it as 'Mini-V series', as in the Mini-V series of attenuators. That second bit I did not see. I wonder if the Singlepower stepper I use is series, ladder or shunt? It seems that second quoted paragraph answers your question though, at least from Goldpoints position.

Well, you could always ask him if it would be safe to roll in some 6GU7's [i recommend the RCA 6GU7]. I seem to remember having a conversation with him at some point where he said that you could throw basically any tube in that spot on his circuit. The headphone section isn't bad? What are your complaints? If you are sick of that crappy pot that is in there, I highly recommend a Singlepower stepped attenuator. Made a huge difference in my amp. -

The point is that I think it is retarded to have tubes sticking out the back of your CD player. I can't be the only one. How's that? -
I don't believe the Goldpoints are series attenuators, what makes you think this?

That APL source looks incredible. I wonder if he would sprout the tubes out of the top rather than the back if you requested it? Any reason that he switched the tubes? All of the designs on his website show 6H30 tubes on the output. -
I'd have to hear it to believe it in order to move from my singlepower stepper to something else. The autoformer volume controls intrigue me though.

I know how that is. Luckily they sound great once the issues are worked out. Too bad you went with the 6SN7, if you went with the 6CG7/6GU7 I would have some recommendations for you as I've tried out most of the tubes out there. Also, the 6GU7 is a lower gain tube which would help you a bit. Not many choices with the 27GB5/PL600. Mine are from the Matsushita factory and sound great... I think there were only 2 or 3 makes of this tube in any case. My amp has 6BQ7A/6BZ7 instead of the 12BQ6, and I use General Electric JAN tubes there. Haven't really tried anything else, but I'm happy with the sound. -
[Warning: mid-fi!] Something like Koss A-250's but with bass? HALP!

Maybe... -
One of the biggest differences I've heard, as far as amps and sources are concerned, was in the pot or stepper. That's all I can really say as I don't understand the science of it.

Is it enjoyable listening to fireworks? I've always gone to watch more than listen personally...

If you sign up for the Dell deals emails, the current spam they are sending is the '5 Days of Gaming Deals'. Mass Effect is $45 bucks Canadian. EDIT: Was. They already sold out. EDIT2: BOLDING

Yeah, that is what usually does it for me too. Hmmm... Well, not sure if I've heard those notes before, or heard them properly, but I certainly enjoy that album on my rig. What sort of speaker setup would you need to properly play that sort of note? If it is 16Hz and Ryan's halving theory holds true, you'd need to get down to 4Hz to REALLY hear everything there.

Welcome to the dark side, Aaron.

Interesting, maybe I should pick up a tone generator to see how low they go on my setup. The documentation says they go to 20hz, of course. Thanks for the quick and dirty lesson Ryan, very informative. I think I understand what you are getting at, and though I can't be certain, I'd say that bass guitar sounds pretty accurate on my rig. Audible memory is a funny thing though, so who knows.

"The i-boob is considered to be a major breakthrough because women are always complaining about men staring at their breasts and not listening to them." So funny.
-
Care to give an example where a rolloff at 40hz will be audible/noticeable? I didn't say there was nothing below 40hz on music, I said not much... as in nothing that you'd miss. Maybe it is the type of music I listen to or we listen for different things, but I stand by that. Damn, I must have missed that music fundamentals course.

Recommendation for an External HD for Mac?
philodox replied to The Monkey's topic in GoRedwings19's Computer Help Hotline
Maybe through private sales, but through a company I think most people agree that paying duty is a given. There is nothing wrong with Canadian customs, there are things wrong with how UPS and FedEx deal with Canadian customs. This is why I always insist on USPS shipping, even if it does take a day or two longer. Even with duty fees, things are cheaper in the US, and with our dollar being basically even at the moment it is definately attractive for us to do our shopping there. I went to Grove City last weekend and got some killer deals. -

Though I am cheap, the main motivation was that stupid NewEgg doesn't ship to Canada. -

Nice, just got a clone off of eBay for 99 cents. [$11 shipping though, of course] -

What kind of tubes do you use in your mcalister amp? -
Though I think they do go below 40, there is not really much left below there anyways... at least not in music.
