Freaky, an LED flashlight hydra. Does it run on AAs or AAAs? I wonder how the battery life is. I have a 3C cell Maglite I've been meaning to convert to LED.

I own not one, but two Monster power conditioners. HTS 5100 Mk II. I paid far below retail (wholesale cost, in fact) and Monster Power products are hardly snake oil compared to their interconnects. I do regret giving such an evil company any of my money. I also own more Monster cables that I care to admit. They're mostly S-Video cables, but I also have some of their coax digital cables and a few of their lower end analog RCAs (which don't have their idiot "bandwidth balanced" geometry. With the exception of maybe one, I paid a fraction of retail for all of these. I still should not have bought them. Oh, I also have one Monster power strip, for which I paid $0. I would like to purge all of the Monster from my house, but realistically, I'm only going to get rid of the power conditioners. If I can sell off a few more worldly possessions, I'm gonna spring for a couple of those APC refurbs. Also, I own a pair of Sony MDR-V700DJs, which are the worst headphones in existence. I bought them in 1999 or 2000, when they were a then-new product, and every DJ had to have a pair. I have atoned for this sin fully by owning MDR-7506s for nearly as long, and upgrading them to Beyer pads. I also have some HD-280s. I was once tempted by a pair of Ultrasone DJ-Pro1s, but I resisted, and I'm glad I did. In 2008, my only major audio sin as been severe disorganization. I bought an upsampling digital source that's single-ended only right before I finally committed to going balanced.

I have been busily selling off my worldly (non audio) possessions, and am within arm's reach of making a bid on the an Audio Research LS9. The seller sent me pictures last night: I love the Smurfy power cord. In some ways, the LS-9 is a strange choice. It's a solid state preamp made by a company renowned for their tube products. In spite of its excellent I/O, it has a fairly humble feature set and (from what I've been able to gather) isn't terribly popular with AR loyalists. That said, I have found no other preamp that does what I want as well as it, for under a grand. I briefly considered bidding on this sexy looking blanced passive pre, but the lack of a second set of balanced outs and dual volume knobs (a pet peeve of mine) made me deciding against it pretty easy. The devil's advocate preamp here is this LS2B Mk II, which is nearly the same price and has almost the same I/O as the LS-9. The major difference here is that it's a hybrid tube/FET pre, and has the associated size, power consumption and heat dissipation. It's also an older design, but I'm not sure how much that matters. For me, the sonic differences between the units would have be pretty staggering for me to choose the LS2B over the LS9.

The animation on that site makes me angry. The IEMs are bizarre looking. So is the "Music Docking Station." The whole site smells of "aesthetics" and marketing over signal quality.
