  1. I'm a bit slow on the uptake, but I just noticed the Balanced Home amp is discontinued. So is the Millett Desktop Hybrid and both Max amps. The Balanced Home was my favorite "all-in-wonder" solution for DAC/amp/preamp. It covered all the bases and did so pretty well. I suggested it to a friend of mine in the antique business (who ended up going with speakers, the cretin.) The Max products were never in my price range, but their existence amused me. Anyone know what HeadRoom has in the works to replace these models? Maybe Tyll can get off Daisy long enough to enlighten us.
  2. Polk Monitor 50s $100 ea. w/ free shipping @ The 'Egg. Onkyo TXSR706B THX Select2 Plus 7.1 HT receiver $479 @ the 'Egg. They also have a 50" 1080p Panasonic Plasma TV for $1300, but I have no idea if that's a good value or not.
  3. I paid for it online last night. eBay charges the state sales tax automagically.
  4. Yep, I got my Quad 12L Actives from him as well. He's a really good guy. The only downside is that I have to pay Taxachusetts because it's in-state. After much debate, I concluded it made more sense to replace my source and gain digital switching than it did to insert a volume control in my already-convoluted signal path. Currently it goes USB -> Edirol UA-5 -> Adcom GCD-750 -> Gilmore Lite -> Quads. The variable and fixed outputs on the Quad 99 will significantly signify things. Additionally, it upsamples and can accept 24/192 input. The only area where the Adcom exceeds the Quad (well, besides weight) is that it has four DACs and true balanced outputs. I am unsure on the sonic differences between the two units. It will be interesting to compare them.
  5. Nate must have heard what you said. I found some top secret leaked spy photos of the mods he made:
  6. Blah blah blah. Today is "Cyber Monday." There are supposedly a lot of online deals to be had. Post some.
  7. Pre-emptive Same surname. Coincidence? It think not.
  8. Quad 99 CDP-2. I am an idiot, I completely can't afford to buy this now. Not if I want to do frivolous things like eat and heat my home. On the plus side, I am no longer in need of a preamp.

  15. Yep, that must be them. They appear to be quite impressive. 400,000JPY in 1988 is uh, $7500 today. They resell for a lot more than that, I imagine. The NSX10Ks are not quite as insane as the 150KG GF-1s, which were seven million yen a pair in 1991 (~$110,000 today). I actually do use all four. The other two are the fronts in my HT system. The odd man out is my 10-years-newer B&W CDN-CNT center channel speaker. It's funny looking, but it manages to hold its own sonically.

  17. I have been waiting to use this macro.
