Is the 4070 really that cold and sterile on the BH? There are times when closed cans really help eliminate external noise (my PC tower is not the most quiet piece; family room TV just outside my mancave, etc). In the dynamic world, Pico and Sensas provide good isolation, but a similar stat solution would also be nice. Warmish source be of benefit? Or, are they just more neutral than the O2 and other cans in the mentioned lineup?

As you carefully followed the advice in your welcome PM and read a lot of what's posted, and while researching the O2, surely you read that the initial decent O2 amps are Stax 717 and KGSS. Right? Finding one for sale then becomes the challenge, but both are around your price range.

You might find yourself living in the midrange until you can spring for a more suitable amp, but it should be a very nice place to live. Congrats.

Spent ~5 hours chasing down a channel issue in my truck stereo; right speaker going in and out. Had the center console in pieces and the source all the way out. Found and fixed problem, re-dressed wires, and re-tuned. System is about 10 years old but still kicks butt. System is an Alpine 7949, ADS P4100.2 20th Anniversary Powerplate for the front driving ADS 336is; ch 3-4 bridged for the sub, and a P240.2 20 Anniversary driving ADS 4i in back doors for rear fill. All speaker wire was replaced with aftermarket stuff and all doors dynamatted. Stays pretty clean at highway volume (high noise floor in my old 4-Runner). Was a good tinker day.

Since I've sworn off buying gear until after the big-boy amp gets here, I'll instead spend a little money on some higher end cable material and plug and see what I can squeak out of the SRD. Looking at some other rewiring with some nice Neotech stuff. What about something like Neotech - 3 Conductors 11 awg with shield? Overkill at 60 clams for 3ft? What would be a good comparable plug? Or, buy single strand 12 awg and twist? Rgr that on grounding, Dan. Have more room to work with these days. Tie the gnd line to the chassis and let the shield float at the transformer end? Sry if noobish; have zero experience with mains.

The mains cable (crappy 2-wire zip cord) on my SRD-Pro is a bit old and warn, and seems way too long. I would like to replace it with something that's of better quality. Of all the better (google results) power cable I've seen, it's all three wire, some shielded and some not. One article on Belden's three-wire shielded (#83803) mention constructing so that at the plug end, the shield wrap and the the ground wire are connected to the wall plug. At the component end, leave the shield floating; use the shield to capture interference traveling through the cable (in or out) and to ground them to earth so they do not cause any unwanted noise. My question is, if I choose a shielded or non-shielded cable and a good three-prong plug, can and should I connect the ground line (and shield if there is one) to the wall plug, and at the transformer end, leave the ground line (and shield if there is one) floating. Or, just find a decent two-wire cable with a molded plug and be done with it. Any recommendations if this is the right course? I will add that I continue to tinker with the SRD-7 just for the fun of it, so there's a weekend-warrior-hobbyist aspect to trying this. I just recently removed the now unused speaker lines; getting down to bare-bones circuitry.

Dear trouble maker - still doing my best to not buy tubes till after I really see what I need. Having settled into a comfortable wait for the BH, I have (almost) completely stopped considering other amps or intermediate steps. Anti-lust mode engaged. Even tempered my desire for the JH13 for a while. Cool, cool. If nothing else, the fall and need for a bit of heat might add some incentive. Just be ready for the early winter mini-meet.

Great exchange you guys. Not interested in a bass monster, just bass extension and speed to capture all the detail down under, help keep the pace. I'm more into midrange clarity and high end sparkle-related detail; the latter is where I think much of the headstage/size-of-recording-studio is reproduced. This is at least more fuel for my wait-to-buy-tubes mandate. If the HE60 does fare well for some recordings, I'll have a better mix when I eventually snag an O2 (how can I not?).

Thanks, Elephas. I sometime listen to music in a recliner with just-audible volume, or when working, to instrumental or import stuff. The (perceived) better control of low volume versus the stepped was one the reasons I invested in the RK50 as well. Very little of my stuff is modern recorded-too-hot-for-the-masses type stuff, but yeah, there are some songs that are like riding a moped or, um, I'll stop there..... They are just fun. Watching your tube news with great interest. Pretty much selling the farm for the BHSE, but might just have to swing for at least one set of tubes to vary the presentation. Plan to do so after delivery and listen-time (this time), but already find myself on the tube sites. Temptations abound. First installment of the Waiting for BHSE Support Group - Thou shall not buy tubes just to feel closer to the goal.

I think they need to duke it out. In one corner we have Spritzer with a light saber constructed of huge (charged) capacitors glued together, and in the other corner, Nate with a some sort of custom octopus extension (like the good doctor in Hellraiser2) covered with hole saws and drill bits, driven with a cordless drill.
