  1. Well the brown pads aren't being made anymore either - though you can find NOS ones - so if you're SOL and can't return, you can get Mk2 pads, black headband and arcs and be fine lookswise at least. IIRC Mk2 headband has stiffer elastics and won't be as good for team melonhead.
  2. $1k seems about right - $1500 minus the cost of refurbishing is what I'd pay. Make sure there are no channel balance issues, no squealing or weird noises and no intermittency issues especially as you move the cables. If all that checks out the drivers are probably fine. The seller should have let you know about the condition, if he didn't, he deserves some choice words in feedback. I also have to wonder what the hell you have to do to an O2 to get it into that kind of shape.
  3. This is the same guy that ranted at length about how the K1000 is obsolete?

I dunno. On one hand yes the libel claim was off the wall, but then again TG consistently shows anti-american and heavy-handed pro-british bias and has been known to fabricate test numbers and outright lie on a large percentage of their more factual claims (see their handling of the Hawk Stratos test). Obviously it's meant to be an entertainment show and obviously its attitude is meant to generate sales, but it rubs a lot of people the wrong way all the same, myself included. I also like the Tesla as a concept - it's an alternative energy car that isn't boring, and making exciting vehicles is what the industry needs to do. So while I don't support Tesla in this, neither do I support the way TG runs its affairs - especially when it comes to North American distribution. But that's a totally different story... 3d episode was kinda "meh" I thought. Race sequence was fake and contrived, and I don't find things that are embarassing for the main characters funny. 4th episode was better, still some cocking about but a bit more genuine this time. And I liked the apology for the India special, and Brian Johnson is awesome. Beautiful Bentley too (the old one).
  5. People waiting for the BHSE to finish aren't sitting on entry-level gear, so I doubt that will affect the cost of entry-level stuff very much. I think the general trend of the market is mediocre stuff going up in price significantly. A lot of used Stax stuff has been a disproportionate bargain for years, and as interest in it goes up it only makes sense for it to go up in value sharply. I think that as the market becomes more and more mature and starts to emulate the progression of the speaker market, DIY will become that much more important as one of the increasingly fewer ways of getting something good on a budget. So yeah... start building now. I know I will, soon. I also think that I'm a bit drunk, so ignore everything above.
  6. If I look at the money I lost being burned when buying used, it actually overcomes what I've saved. I'm pretty sure from now on I'm buying new unless I completely trust the seller. Mind you, I'm an idiot and trust people too easily. Hopefully over time I'll be less trusting if not less dumb.
  7. Allagash White maybe? What makes you think anybody here wants a Beyerdynamic headphone?
  8. This. The whole Canon vs Nikon thing is a constant game of leapfrog, and switching to one or the other depending on who's ahead at the moment is a sure-fire way to waste money needlessly. Stick with whatever lens family you've invested in. 36mp is completely unnecessary unless you need to make wall-sized prints. The lack of a low-pass filter though is very cool, though with a 4fps continuous shooting speed this is obviously only a studio/landscape camera. I'm more interested in the 1Dx, or I would be if I could afford needed one.

2d episode starts off very strongly but then goes a bit downhill. Still very solid and worth watching. TG seems to be a bit more car-focused now and it's about time.
  11. Thanks for the suggestions. I hate not having technical knowledge and not being able to contribute more meaningfully. I always find it very frustrating to learn something you have no background in, but I suppose any learning is frustrating and it's time to just man up and build something. I tried that, heavily, a few years back. The problem is that the other site as we remembered it only exists in our heads. Nearly everybody that's there now joined after it turned to shit, and shit is all they ever knew. Hell, most of the trolls joined because that's the way they like it. Nobody that's there now was there to remember the audiophole/enthusiast board days and anybody yelling about quality content, technical knowledge, and responsibility to the community just comes off as more old men yelling about getting off their lawn. It's not our lawn anymore, it's theirs. Any attempt to help it would be us trying to change it into something it isn't, forcefully, and isn't going to work - and to my mind isn't worth the effort. Yes, it's having a destructive effect on the hobby but I don't know what can be done about it apart from what we're doing already.
  12. Also wanted to ask this. I have no background in electrical engineering and audio whatsoever but would like to learn, I just don't know where to begin. [Edit: thanks deepak]

Didn't like the India special - fake and contrived. This new episode on the other hand was really good. The whole season is looking to be quite good actually, can't wait for more.
  14. I saw Liquid Soul at a psytrance festival. He had the unfortunate task of playing right after Simon Posford... and truth be told he blew Simon away. This disk has been getting a disproportional amount of playtime lately...
  15. That's the Mercedes T80 streamliner. That's so cool... I believe there's a lot of pressure on M-B to restore it and run it up to full speed just to see what would have happened. It was powered by a 44 liter 3000hp aircraft engine and was projected to hit 750kph (about 470mph) but then something happened in 1940 that put an end to that plan. For all the environmentalists out there...
  16. Buddy 'Bones' Jenkins. Hey, I always thought Dr. McCoy was pretty cool. Oh wait, Blues...
  17. Exactly. Your point may be valid but in response to that point you're letting tools out into the wild that can be abused in incredible ways. Tools that will stay long after the current administration, congress, senate, w/e is out of power unless they're struck down by the supreme court. So you're essentially gambling on them not being abused in the long term, and historical precedent is not on your side.
  18. If SOPA and PIPA pass we'll have a lot more problems than not having the Slow Forum. And yes, I don't see anything wrong in taking an overly alarmist tone over this. These regulations need to die and whoever endorsed them needs to be voted out of office. Civic rights are not a right, they're a constant struggle, and this one is ours. My only issue with these blackouts is that the people that they're likely to reach are already against these regulations, so all they can really do is make them a bit more vocal. Now if google blacks out all of its services... now we're talking.
  19. Also, there are so many $1k+ headphones floating around now (and apparently finding some success) that I'm beginning to wonder if there isn't a perception in the market that if a headphone isn't priced at $1k it's not that high-end... and if that factored into Senn's decision to price it this way. Also I have to wonder if they intentionally didn't make it as good as it could be to make sure that it didn't sound better than the HD800 (in which case they should be called Porsche). Anyway, that's enough idle speculation from me. Looking forward to more impressions from the show.
  20. Don't know much about price discrimination, but I did have a feeling that Senn are charging as much as they are just because they can. I'm not a fan of the looks but I'm hardly a qualified judge in that area. I don't know jack about trends or urbal lifestyle products or any of that nonsense. I like vintage steam cars, vacuum tubes, and monocles, what the hell do I know. I like the HD600/HD650, at their price they're solid buys and I think they sound like they measure: good. At HD700/HD800 levels I don't see any reason to not get something planar. But again, once a Stax fanboy... and so on. I would like to hear these, but I won't get a pair just because. Eagerly looking forward to the measurements though.
  21. Celebrating New Year's with a hangover that Charles Bukowski could be proud of. This sucker is so massive it can be seen from outer space. Happy New Year's everybody - and remember, don't drink too much cask strength whisky. That stuff bites!.
  22. How do they measure better? I see slightly higher THD for the LCD3, and possibly slightly more linear FR for the Rev2 though the measurements on the whole look very similar. But maybe I'm reading it wrong.
  23. Oh yeah. This thread. Been digging Coroner lately. Well, by digging I mean amazed at and seriously upset that they aren't better known. Why this band isn't routinely mentioned in the same vein as Atheist and Watchtower is beyond me. Well, actually, it is, but by not enough people. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCT7j41Qa5o Some call them the Rush of thrash, but I'm not entirely sure that's valid. They're the Coroner of thrash. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BIfXhILMEc
  24. You walked into the lion's den here. But seriously, check out www.innerfidelity.com - Tyll's recommendations are worth a hundred times more than all the noise you'll get on head-fi. Alternatively, buy this car: No, technically it's not quite what you're looking for, but by my flawless logic, if you can afford this, you can afford any headphones you want!
  25. I especially like the thinly veiled threats among the moral high ground. Real classy.
