  1. Perhaps I'm the minority on that, I don't have a lot of experience, but has the idea ever crossed your mind? I compared the custom JH5 to universal JH13 at Can Jam and yeah there were differences, for sure but lots of similarities. After about 15 minutes of A/B/C/X/Y/Z ing I came to the conclusion that I would have no idea how much better the custom JH13 would be than the universal, but my expectation would be pretty high. Also, FWIW I preferred my custom fit, even if it was the lowly JH5 to the universal JH13 (boo hiss I know, but reread the previous sentence again). I'm probably the last person that could really solve this mystery, but this thread was odd enough that I decided to stir the pot a bit.
  2. Heh, where's Reks to step in with the sarcasm 'o meter? Anyways, as long as you pay enough, of course I have the skills, even if that involves subcontracting Fitz It would help if I had two pairs though, that way I could mix and match when need be.
  3. finally someone that understands me! Just got back to Austin and confused by this thing called "night" I don't really care how many pairs he has, but at first glance my question was why so many pairs and no customs?
  4. please explain this more
  5. No, I screwed that up. Damn dead hookers all over the place, make typing on the iPhone so much more difficult.
  6. I didn't realize you had JH-5 customs!
  7. Just listen and enjoy it. If you don't like it then wait the stated number of hours and then ask that it be returned and given a once-over because the burn-in is broken too.
  8. Why would anyone own multipe pairs of earbuds/universal IEMs? Seems strange to me, considering how much better the cheapest customs are to any universal i've ever tried
  9. I think I just found a new modding business. Upgrading VC wires to 18 AWG Jena. Talk about bass restriction!
  10. Heading to Vegas for the week!
  11. I would have guessed 100 dB peak at say 12-15 feet away from a piano. That's a rare case though, and probably 90 dB peaks is more common. 120dB seems high to me. I'd be curious to see some data though.
  12. perhaps the Pioneer B20FU20 would be right up your alley?
  13. perhaps add a small section about cathode connection options, given that this might be linked to in conjunction with this amp that can select between WE and LED options?
  14. I've been playing with the Jordan full ranger lately and helping it out a bit with a ribbon crossed as a super tweeter
  15. I'm finding this to be the case more and more. I've even been listing to this with the K1000.
  16. yeah, I remember seeing it in your sig. Sounds pretty nice and lots of power to boot.
  17. The Krell KAV-400xi K1000 combo doesn't suck.
  18. Nice complement to Head Case in there as well
  19. I'd wager you can get everything from SumR, Mouser and B&D for KGSS and the BH. Add in a case vendor, wire vendor, output jack vendor, a attenuator vendor and FPE, so that makes 8, max. (Since this is a beginner project, we need to assume nothing is on hand, fair?) So, how many vendors did you use for your exstata build?
  20. good point in fact. As long as you avoid the extra power supply, but yeah definitely possible. Beefy: let's not start that "easily available parts stuff"... I do agree about nice available documentation. Perhaps we can get TomB interested in distributing a 'stat amp
  21. But how many Stax designs have as few gain stages? I really think the J271 is a great part here, just need Fairchild to offer binned versions... Edit: maximing Idss is one way to maximize gm. I pointed out the proper way to choose devices in the HF thread.
  22. I bought a couple hundred each of 2SJ74V and 2SK170V a while back, but hard to get now. Looking forward to sticking them in the output stage of my little JFET amp. As for needing 50 J271 to get a good quad, that's crazy. Trust me, I'd wager I've matched more than anyone else.
  23. Craig, do you have a recommendation for a good flux remover? Pure alcohol and large boards have never worked well together in my experience no matter how much compressed air you use.
  24. most likely they'll just flash the thing... heck, that thing's so beautiful I'd flash it just to see if I had a chance with it.
  25. I did in fact like it when I heard it on two occasions at meets. Probably listened to it 1 hour or so on two or three separate occasions. Three different versions, the latest iteration my favorite, never heard the latest SS version. I was about as vocal as people were allowed to be about the previous versions not sounding right, and the current hybrid version was definitely better than the previous ones, as long as you didn't turn them up too loud. Anyways, all that to say then I built a SS version. Then I sold it.
