  1. grr. I'm so happy with my new LCD-1. I'd definitely like to compare them side by side to the LCD-2, if they/anyone could oblige. I don't think I'll blindly upgrade, that's for sure.
  2. huh, the LCD-2 are different drivers?
  3. extremely smooth, insane low end authority of the non-NoNoNoNoNoNo variety, very musical. Very different flavor than the beta22 offers.
  4. OK, A few quick words about my initial impressions of the Audeze 1. This is swt61, posting on Marc's CPU. Through the balanced Beta22... A very smooth, clear presentation, quite familiar to the Donut MkII sound (that's a really good thing IMO). Very resolving and fast, with a pretty good sound stage as orthos go. The one real difference I notice over the Donuts is the top end. These Audeze (bare in mind these are the dBel modded units) are very hot! I didn't know that an ortho could be this hot. Now personally I like my top end just a bit softer, but I know that Marc likes his treble just short of irritating, and these are perfectly suited to his listening preference. Now don't get me wrong, I wouldn't call them harsh, and I'd most likely become accustomed to the sound quickly enough. They're just a bit brighter than what I've been using lately. Bass is really nice. Plenty of low end info, as far as I'm concerned. Though I have not heard a stock pair, I'll say that I'm quite impressed with this version. Through the Pass F5... The F5 isn't what I'd call a highly colored amp, but as compared to the almost dead neutrality of the Beta22, it's subtle flavoring is noticeable. The F5 has a slightly more euphoric sound. Somewhat tube like in presentation. The top end driven by the Pass is just about perfect to my ears. All in all a really nice headphone, and more solidly built than the pictures mislead. Can't wait to hear the 2s now!
  5. echo "real hack0rz use vi" | tr "v" "t" | tr "i" "r"
  6. I believe the only operating system that (might still) ship with vi is FreeBSD. The reason I surmise this to be true? I always know I'm on FreeBSD immediately when the recover functionality and visual mode don't work.
  7. This in from Craig: "There was a recent mixup with our STAX supplier, as apparently STAX has stopped producing the separate SR-007 brown and SR-007A black pads. They now sell only the SR-007A black pads under a new part number, the EP-007. As a result, there has been a bit of a delay in getting your pads -- but they should be arriving at our office hopefully early next week."
  8. quick reply. Finally got the F5 running last night with the K1K. A bit of hum in one channel that we need to work out. Other is dead silent, so it's a wiring issue I'm sure. We though one channel was dead for a while, even though everything measured correctly. Somehow the input came loose on the source side
  9. as stable as the power in your wall I'd presume
  10. ask about the upgrade price too
  11. <awaits e-mail> whoever gets details first, post or ban.
  12. Personally, I wouldn't buy once unless it had 0-250VAC output
  13. I don't use vi, I vastly prefer vim. Also, ed for the win ya young whippersnappers.
  14. I was referring to some comments in this gem of a thread: HD800 modification thread - Head-Fi: Covering Headphones, Earphones and Portable Audio
  15. doh, that's not pretty. I'm wondering if the length of the new cable has anything to do with the change in sound. Thoughts?
  16. Don: heh, forgot my player cannot play burned discs. oops... For whomever asked the other day, the Muse is: Xilinx CPLD -> DF1704 -> 4 x PCM1704 -> passive filter -> 4 x INA103
  17. swt61: um... "yay" I need to do a bit of surgery to a board, could you bring the smallest drill bit you happen to have? ... nothing fancy this time, mostly listening .. and repairing the odd smoking build. standard fare.
  18. listening ... liking ...
  19. Looks like round two may begin this weekend
  20. me neither yay!
  21. Kevin, have you ever considered trying to use IGBTs? I don't think they're going away anytime soon, question would be how to use them ... high voltage certainly isn't a problem, neither is dissipation. They have decent transconductance, and easier to drive than a MOSFET...
  22. Not enough of an issue in my opinion to dismiss the topology entirely.
  23. that's sorta what I mean. You're thinking at the component level. I'm saying there is another way to think of that, and this is at the stage level internal to an amplifier. One amp may have four stages and another has a single stage. Is the one with fewer stages better? I don't think it's that easy. Furthermore, you may have an amp with one stage and a preamp with one stage (so two stages combined), is that worse than a amp with three stages and no preamp? Food for thought I guess.
  24. I avoided that combination on purpose I dunno, I think the KGSS+ESP-950 has the edge to the KGSS+SR-007, from a holistic standpoint.
  25. I don't know if this really makes sense. Some amplifiers have multiple gain stages, few have single gain stages. In the case of a preamp, it's just another gain stage. Anyways, I think it's impossible to make the statement that a preamp limits a K1000 rig categorically.
