  1. Probably a "transistor tester", which measures hfe as well as a temperature probe would be the only other things I could think of. Looks like the meter I have, the BK2706A is now discontinued and replaced with a version with less features. If I was going to buy something, I'd consider taking a chance on this one: VC99 3 36/7 Auto range DMM analog bar better FLUKE17B - eBay (item 170388685166 end time Oct-29-09 08:12:04 PDT) but perhaps there are some better recommendations out there...
  2. what features do you need? You can just buy nice probes and using your existing meter, just as another option. In fact, I think Fitz posted a link somewhere for the probes he really likes. I like the BK Precision meters. Here's a list, with MSRP: Handheld Digital Multimeters - Multimeters - B&K Precision Depending on the features you need, I think you'll find something that will work for you there.
  3. That's okay, a negative review actually can be very beneficial for people that know they have diametrically opposite tastes as the reviewer.
  4. OMG! Is that the BHSE Slim?

  6. perhaps what you need is a few goats... or a machete... or controlled burn
  7. "messing about" or "measuring about" I'd rather see measurements that "subjective increase in SQ" ... I guess I don't understand why some of these designs are so void of measurements. Not an attack, really.. I just don't get it I guess.
  8. I'll try: phono stage > arm > table > cartridge > isolation > phono cable In some senses "table type" would have to be the most important to me, but I realize that's a pretty polarizing conversation. edit: yes, I totally ignored jp# post, heh just read it now though
  9. smegster: read this in its entirety: ecp.cc There will be a quiz tomorrow.
  10. Thanks guys! Spent the day yesterday in panic mode at work getting things ready for a big test/certification that we (were forced) into doing. Seems that this weekend will be the final push. Had to pull the 2 year old girl birthday party sob story to my boss to get some time off today I'm sure those with kids know that their birthdays always overshadow yours, but there's lot of pride in that I suppose!
  11. All I'm saying is one can get boards stuffed cheaper in China than in some middle-class working dude's toaster oven. One's time in China is worth slightly more than $0, at approximately $3 per hour. edit: doh, we're saying the same thing
  12. now, I wasn't going to *say* that... this isn't diyhifi.org
  13. what's generating a waveform with a 7ns rise time?
  14. Kevin, what would one use to get the Jeff Rowland ripple effect? I think that's a cool look, just not sure how one would do it...
  15. ... or expensive "labor"
  16. just don't ask what the average seat in the house costs http://deadspin.com/5344216/cowboys-stadium-offers-valuable-seating-behind-this-brick-wall
  17. I dunno. I picked my lot up in person in China. I think I paid around $6 each for the octals with my mother-in-law doing the bargaining.
  18. CMC I'd wager
  19. a compass / scribe?
  20. dreamwhisper: are you a AT fanboy? Really, the ATH-A900ti sounded okay, but nothing all that special I thought.
  21. yup, Mk1 + Mk2 (pads) = Mk3 The pads are the really useful part from the Mk2 though
  22. not that lucky, as that cable is long gone.
