I don't know if this really makes sense. Some amplifiers have multiple gain stages, few have single gain stages. In the case of a preamp, it's just another gain stage. Anyways, I think it's impossible to make the statement that a preamp limits a K1000 rig categorically.

I'm going to get offed by the mafia for this one, but I'd say: no with the Blue Hawaii + SR-007 no with the KGSS + ESP-950 maybe with my KGSS + ESP-950 I'm working on it though, plenty of projects in various stages...

Yeah, I'm betting 15 days or so. I used a normal thermocouple to do the final tweaking for your F5. Those heat sinks are very nice. It does help that there isn't an enclosure per se The reason this is handy is for measuring the temperature of the tab on TO-3P devices, for example. I never had the surgeon's hand to do this with my thermocouple, as I always assumed it could easily short the tab to the case given a slight mishap. I was thinking about getting a Fluke, but didn't know for sure if I could sell the thing based on taking the kid's temperature and baking alone. If I could have gotten those two applications, it would have been an easy sell.

Some of the DIY amplifiers to drive this were pretty cool in and of themselves. Yes, direct drive a flat 0.35 impedance (250 Hz - 20kHz) Anyways, seems one of the rare things that the interwebs never "rediscovered".
