I suppose you didn't see my F4 in the other pictures. In fact, Steve's build is very compact. The boards are very small.. It's just the caps and toroid that are large. I think it's quite the nice size actually. 148,000uF is about the minimum here, given the current demands of the circuit and the fact that it's just a simple CRC supply.

heh, yeah it works just fine, but I had to fine tune a few parts to also support all the way down to the low bias phones. No need to cut traces, etc. though I looked at my original prototype and the values were right there... RTFM Fired up Als and it was at like 1050 V or something and I was worried my meager 1kV meter was going to go before I had time to grab the trimmer and stop turning.. Obviously, I couldn't just turn it off, way less exciting that way.

with regard to the F5, well this was a case of double fail... The BOM at tech-diy had a pair of parts reversed, *and* the AudioExpress article did as well. What are the chances? I figured something was up when I first saw things, but decided to check both of these places to be absolutely sure Anyways, parts are off and ready to be swapped... now I think I'm going to count my lucky stars that nothing blew up and go by some insurance.. a variac at Fry's

yeah, I played both a lot before really getting into DIY. Now, I don't have time. I'm probably at an average strength in Japan, i.e. can comfortably play in clubs with a proper handicap, well at least ~3 years ago I could... when I was in China over Christmas I was at the same strength as the weakest person in one of the nicer clubs in Beijing, after not playing for quite some time. +1 I've made a final change to the BOM and plan on order parts today for the PoC boards. I changed from the Xicon 2/5/10ohm resistors to the Vishay/BC, as it seems that we are not going to get the extra space we need for the above resistors. The BC are a very compact package (1W for the 5/10 and 2W for the 2R), but are 5% resistors. I think these will work fine for the time being. Doug: Theoretically, is there a lower bound on how low one can (reasonably) lower the impedance on either OTL or transformer-based designs (two different estimates, obviously... also, without resorting to a hybrid amplifier)? I agree with the comment that lower impedance is pretty much always better... I haven't heard a case where this isn't true, let's put it that way.
