  5. Senn holding off to wait for proper materials does not lessen my confidence in quality. I'm still looking forward to them. The delay worked out well for me, as it freed me up to buy a few things I needed anyway.

  13. OK, so here is the original thread I found. The Phantom Mimbler: How to take your Drobo apart... And here is the stock fan that comes with the 1st gen. Drobo, which is louder than the latest (2nd gen) Drobo. The blog is from April 25, 2008, and doing a search on Engadget revealed the 2.0 Drobo announcement in July 2008, so everything above is the 1st generation.
  14. this thread will change that soon
  15. I'm told changing it voids warranty, but ymmv. Also, the guy who took these shots said something about the Drobo using a different power connector, which required either splicing some wires differently or making a connector, or some such jazz. I forget the specifics, but I think I have it bookmarked at work, and I'll post the link here tomorrow. It took a while to find for some reason, not too many internal Drobo pics out there....
  16. I found these images online, I dont know if its a 1st or 2nd Gen Drobo. But the fan seems decent enough to me. The smaller the fan, the more noise, in general. These seem big enough. If this is the 1st Gen, chances are the 2nd Gen fans are even bigger.
  17. Alot of the computer folk have enough spare crap around to make 2 or 3 computers sometimes tho. I'm just bitter after explaining to such people that a full tower, motherboard, powersupply, ram, etc is not always as desirable as something the size of the Drobo.

  19. Funny, there's so much tough talk on some of the forums about Drobo, how "any idiot can build a cheaper server in a computer case", blah blah blah. Yet so many entries....hmmmm.
  20. you'd think they'd pony up more than 2 drives, but hey, the price is right.
  21. I didnt get to finish typing my response earlier at work. I'd recommend a Drobo for music over any NAS or server. Drobo is by no means the fastest, but chances are you simply don't need all the bells and whistles of the usually-more-expensive servers. Lately my Drobo has been quite quiet, except for when waking up, where the drives initialize. But there have definitely been moments in the past where the fans were noticeable. For what its worth, they claim the Drobo 2.0 is much quieter than the first iteration. I can't confirm this, as I've only had the 2nd iteration. Without a doubt my favorite part of Drobo is the ability to mix and match drive sizes/brands. A kickass raid 1 setup isnt going to do me much good when I can no longer find a replacement for a specific make and model of drive, which will likely be obsolete by the time a replacement is needed. This whole scenario is moot with Drobo, just buy whatever drives you goddamn please. edit: I cant speak to video, havent tried it.
