  1. Nah, I'll wait 'till the film comes out I prefer real engineering myself. I read stuff all the time, just not fiction. Unless it's Government policies...
  2. Soldering iron, saw, wood drill bits and mounting tape.
  3. It all worked out in the end, I found a 25W Weller pencil iron so we're all set. Now I can start rewiring stuff
  4. The fuck is that I needed it straight away. The interwebz ain't that quick.

  6. Thanks all. Frys is a good distance away and Lowes doesn't seem to carry much. I'm not planning on doing anything as extensive as an amp, just little things like resoldering phones and the odd connector.
  7. Ok don't start.. It's the only place nearby that stocks them. So anyone tried any of their crap? I see they have numerous irons from pistol grip 40W to Pencil 15W and adjustable butane 25-50W. Any recommendations on power/type etc for phone wires and circuit DIY work?
  8. I'm sending my kettle to Alex for Bi-Wiring as I have twin outlets. Not only will my tea taste better, it will boil twice as fast.
  9. Lol, and there was me thinking Sony had it fitted with some superwire Yes it does feel nice, certainly nicer than the Stax ones.
  10. What's special about the sony cable? I was thinking of replacing it with a stax one so I can cut down on the number of transformer boxes I have littering up the place. I don't want to reterminate the end.
  11. Cool stuff, I'm glad this thread is taking off despite our small numbers. Steve, I'd be interested to see what you'd come up with for the SFI drivers. I currntly have the ECR-500 stripped down to it's pieces with a view to modding and replacing the old foam and cable etc. Fungi, thanks for the offer. I downloaded the service manual a while ago as I've been looking for some ECRs on and off for over a year now so I'm set.
  12. Always happy to oblige people with a happy death
  13. Koss ESP-950 Electrostats
  14. Talking about the ECR, can I get a stax cable and wire it to the ECR drivers and plug it into my Stax transfos? I'm assuming 'yes'. Too many boxes right now. I need to consolidate.
  15. The drivers look to be in sweet condition. The subdued highs seem easy to remedy, I took the drivers out of the housing and there's plenty of treble there, just not realized in it's current configuration. The foam in the back is rotting and the brass fixing frame is corroding a bit so I'll do some cleaning and see what's what. I haven't taken the box apart yet to see what's going on in there but I feel there's a huge potential with them. Perfect channel balance and way more bass than your average stax or ortho. Mine are fitted with SR-5 pads which are an almost perfect fit. Luckily I had a new set laying around. The SFI and ECRs are just reinforcing my view that planars are what I like best. I'm now down to 2 dynamic types. K1000 and KSC 75.
  16. It might be crazy, will it sound any good, that's the question. In the meantime I have to do some thinking on how to mod the Sonys.
  17. Nice job Spritz me old mate! I have to admit I do like the little SFIs, cheap and good. I'm having fun with mine.
  18. Happy birthdays Have some cake!
  19. Great for stoners. No matter how high you get you can always find them.
  20. Congrats to all the new O2 owners While not Stax, I did receive my new (old) Sony ECR-500 electrets from Fungi and am enjoying them right now. Shit they need a lot of juice to work well. I tried them on my Firestone Big Joe and it was struggling and distorting so I threw the old Hafler at them. Now they're happy They are a sweet little can and the years don't seem to have had any ill effect on them, very nice bass and delicious mids. Not as quick as the Staxes and a little recessed in the upper regions but very nice indeed for those sibilant and sharp recordings. They sound very spacious with good out of head imaging. Me like
  21. Have you ever tried to save greens with a wife about?
  22. All my amps added together wouldn't amount to more than $500 and none are anywhere near the standards of the ones on the list.
  23. Sigh, I wish I could afford just one nice amp.
