  1. I'm in. What was the name of the movie again? /me goes back and looks
  2. I'm currently reading the books (on the last one) -- highly recommended if you're into dark fantasy at all. Some of the best reading I've had in a while. You're welcome to borrow my copies if you can get them back to me by September (I want to lend them to my sister when she's here)...or you're welcome to borrow them after. She's a quick reader (and voracious, so she'll probably be done with them by October).
  3. Possibly. I had issues when I did this. I was using a Singlepower Supra++ (old school chassis as well) -> Musical Fidelity A300 power amp (whose gain is insanely high) -> Dynaudio Special 25's (full-range speakers), and I got this bass clicking -- had something to do with being full range drivers; sounded like tubes expanding when warming up. It wouldn't do it on Hirsch's bookshelves, but it did do it when we tried to use it on a subwoofer of his. Hirsch contacted Mikhail about this, and determined the "problem", part of which was that it wasn't intended to be used as a preamp. Mine is an early model, as is yours, so yours could have the same problem. There is a fix for it. It has something to do with the power supply. I would contact Mikhail about it -- he should know if yours was before or after this or not. It's not a fault of the amp's, I should emphasize -- I believe the ones with a preamp out do not have this problem at all. It might just be a DC filter on the output, but I honestly don't remember. I never "fixed" it on mine, as I got rid of the amp (money crunch) before I had a chance to investigate it.
  4. Looks good. I like the black room treatments, too. And of course I've heard good things about Tannoys.
  5. Yeah, one should reinstall Windows every once in a while. Software rot.
  6. I thought they were a fictitious invention by Larry Niven, similar to the space elevator.
  7. No personal experience, but I've heard good things about them.
  8. link Nice review, larryminator.
  9. Yeah, if I was typing with my penis, you would have seen a lot more typos.
  10. No. I had the fork sort of pinched between my fore- and middle fingers in such a way that the toothed end was pointed upwards, and typing with my fingers that way. Left hand was occupied with the bowl. Later, I set it down and returned to typing properly, but I was actually masticating at the time of that post.
  11. Green Curry Chicken and Eggplant with Rice from Pilin. And yes, I have the bowl in my left hand and the fork in my right as I am typing this.
  12. I would say do it on Windows. There are all sorts of utilities on Windows for retrieving files back from your iPod -- I don't know if the same can be said of the Mac. You know, just in case a sync deletes all your files on your computer.
  13. I'd try to hear Quad 22L's before dropping coin...
  14. Thanks for the info. Will investigate further on my own...
  15. May I be the first to say: needle-drop! Please! Damit, I was actually holding that in my hands during Tower's going out of business sale and didn't buy...
  16. Sorry to make you rehash all this shit, but...which headphones are you using? Baby O? Is it possible that they were hard to drive? What other amps did you compare with? I'm asking all this because I heard another amp which I very much liked, and this is supposed to be a step up from it according to Pete, and IIRC, it handled "busy music" quite well. But your criticism that it didn't handle busy music well is a deal-killer, as I do listen to quite a bit of busy music. Well, I guess I could just ask him if I can return it if it doesn't sound as good as Dave's...
  17. Why do they need to get married at all? Marriage is so yesteryear.
  18. Good point. Yeah, stay away from those open baffles. I did see a corner-loaded design in one of those links I posted -- that might work, if you can put them in corners.
  19. Also, I was told to just get a pair of Visaton B200's, and just mount them on an open baffle. I have no idea whether or not that's good advice, I'm just repeating the advice I was given. Also: I found an email with a whole bunch of links that I collected when I was considering my weird speaker project (omnidirectional w/full-range drivers, supertweeters and subwoofer, non-crossoverless) (I checked all the links, I didn't accidentally include anything too bizarre, but not all of them are entirely apropos, some I just found interesting): http://geocities.com/rbrines1/Enter.html http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=30515 http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=58909 http://www.decware.com/newsite/mainmenu.htm http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?forumid=22 http://www.solen.ca/ http://www.audiocircle.com/circles/viewtopic.php?t=19253 http://www.audiocircle.com/circles/viewforum.php?f=78 http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread/t-10556.html http://www.linkwitzlab.com/orion_challenge.htm http://www.aes.org/publications/anth.cfm http://www.madisound.com/kits.html http://www.madisound.com/bk16.html http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21740 http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=22 http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=18 http://www.pesupport.com/cgi-bin/config.pl http://www.audioholics.com/techtips/setup/loudspeakers/DIYspeakers.php http://home.earthlink.net/~etunstal/diy.htm http://www.diyspeakers.net/ http://www.fys.uio.no/~magnushj/Spring/
  20. I've always found Fostex intriguing. Eifl is nice enough to list enclosure plans right on the site next to the driver. I've been told that adding a sub eliminates any improvements you may have made by getting rid of the crossover, but I personally disagree -- you're still keeping it down to a minimum. You may also want to look at Reference 3a -- crossoverless mid, and minimal crossover on the tweet.
  21. Is this really news around here? I don't really follow specs...but I have to admit to being curious.
  22. "Experiment"? What was experimental about it? Where is he selling it? Do you mind if I contact him directly about it (I'm thinking you won't, since it might mean that you get paid sooner) -- if so, whose amp should I ask about?
